What characteristic must an interpreter have or what must (s)he have achieved as the result of his/her training?

That's a very broad question. Generally, interpreters should be able to interpret in the three modes, simultaneous, consecutive and sight. That said, there are many different settings where interpreters could gain experience. Two of the main ones are conference (or escort/executive) interpreting and court interpreting. In conference interpreting you can paraphrase, whereas in court interpreter you have to render into the other language what was said word by word. There are interpreters who work in hospitals, and many different types of businesses, and in many cases, they are required to be translators too.

Hope this is what you were asking. Good luck to you!
