Either this means that someone has been posing as other translators/agencies, or it means that someone is trying to get payments from freelancers/agencies by pretending that he/she worked for them, hoping that it won't be checked.

It goes without saying that I do not know this individual and that I have never worked with him/her.

Proz.com management, contact me for the e-mail address mentioned in the mail if you need more information.

Thank you! May 9, 2009

So it's a scam. Then I can safely list the e-mail address: it's [email protected]

Obviously they're trying to scam bigger agencies that may forget to check whether said supplier actually is a supplier of theirs. I have reported this to the FBI and Paypal.

What makes this dangerous is that the mail itself is from the real Paypal: these mails are as real as they get.

One more address May 9, 2009

I have received several times an email from the domain: PayPaI.com (the letter is "I" but not "L")

They are also sending such mails and some of them very similar with paypal's design.

Same case here May 9, 2009

Hi all,

Today I received a request through PayPal to pay a certain "Mary Translator" ([email protected]) an amount of $317,20 for "completed translation" with the comment: "It was very nice wordking with you, you can pay me via payPa"l, Kind regards, Mary".

I have never had any business with a contact of this kind.

I really hope you don't have such experiences and please take this as a warning.

Kind Regards,
Sherefedin

Archive and not cancel!!! May 9, 2009

May I suggest that you archive the money request without cancelling, as to avoid giving the f*****g b*****d feedback in the sense that you DID receive the request? By archiving, the matter is finished. If you use the Cancel function, the sender will receive a message from your account, which is right what they want: knowing that you use the account... and keep trying!!!

Report the infraction to Paypal May 9, 2009

So that they cancel that user's account and that they create a way for users only to receive requests from emails they know and define specifically, not from any email address in space.

I too just received it May 9, 2009

and forwarded the details to PayPal Security.

Uldis

Added- I already received an answer from PayPal:

"Thanks for forwarding that suspicious-looking email. You're right - it
was a phishing attempt, and we're working on stopping the fraud. By
reporting the problem, you've made a difference!"

So, obviously, there will not be any more scams from this user.

I panicked for a moment... May 9, 2009

when I got the email just now, thinking, as you did, that an outsourcer may be posing as myself and there was a genuine request for payment!!

But googling "Marytranslator" took me to this discussion which started just over an hour ago!! Long live the internet, Google and Proz

Hello!

This is just to say thank you to the people who are letting others know about the scam and for the advice on what to do, and not to do.

Well done, Proz people!

Me too... May 9, 2009

the message really looked genuine, and it took me by surprise.
Just one thing: usually, the messages from Paypal have my name, and their logo, but this just had the email address.

I was searching for this name (marytranslator) in google, when I found this topic.

Thank you guys, this is what the forum is for - putting our experience in use for the benefit of all of us.

I have also notified paypal, it's good they know about this.
