Hi all estimated colleagues!

I was wondering what the best practice (if any!) could be to charge clients that request:

a) glossary creation
b) glossary maintenance
c) TM creation (through Alignment)
d) Post-editing (i.e. translate Machine Translation into Human Translation)

Anyone willing to share his/her experience with colleagues?

TAV!
Renato

Hourly rate May 14, 2010

Hi Renato,
I usually charge an hourly rate for all of them but for MT post editing which I refuse to do at all.

The hourly rate is similar to that of an IT expert (e.g. an hour of programming).

CLARIFICATION May 14, 2010

Hi all again...

Let me clarify, that I'm referring to the quoting stage!
Please read my thread as it was:

I was wondering what the best practice (if any!) could be to QUOTE requests of:

a) glossary creation
b) glossary maintenance
c) TM creation (through Alignment)
d) Post-editing (i.e. translate Machine Translation into Human Translation)

...in a way that clients know in advance how much it could be the cost of glossary/TM I will provide them...

And so, if you charge per hours, how do you estimate the time taken by these tasks?
And, if you charge per words, how do you estimate the cost per word?

PS: Hi Stanislav, it's always a pleasure to (e)meet you!

Nice to e-meet you too, Renato.

Estimates like this can be extremely difficult to make, especially without seeing the files first. I usually propose an hourly rate and arrange things so, that the client can see I'm working on the file(s) in question (remote desktop, WMVare, working directly at the client's place). This is fully transparent and makes it possible for the client to track the progress.

I usually cannot tell in advance how long is this or that task going to take; I can only make a very rough estimate.

I know this probably isn't very helpful but as I said earlier: estimates like this are very difficult to make.
