I represent an translation agency based in India. I would like to discuss my fellow Indian translation agency that if is there any service tax applicable on translation industry based in India. We will appreciate if you could help us in this.

Yes, The service tax is applicable only for the clients based in INDIA. First you need to get the service tax registration number.

Translation services weren't under service tax purview in India before budget 2012. Specifically, the export of services; and even if it was for Indian clients there was an exemption of 10 lac on gross.

But the situation has changed since budget 2012 hsa been announced. It is still a topic of great debate. For clarifications, we have asked many Chartered Accountants about the service tax provisions for the export of translation services.
