Hi there,

has anyone been receiving what appear to be bogus applications for work with attached CVs from googlemail/gmail addresses on a fairly regular basis recently?

I haven't opened the attachments for obvious reasons. Initially, I completely forgot about the first application, but then my suspicions were aroused when I received a second one from a "completely different" person with very similar wording. I have since received three more. It's very strange, because I rarely use that e-mail address anymore, although it is the one i'm still registered here with.

Best regards
clwydian

Poor idiots buying email databases Feb 17, 2011

At a guess I would say it is some poor idiots that have bought one of those "List of Translation Agency emails" that are sold, the idea is you buy a list of emails supposedly belonging to translation agencies and you send them your CV.

I guess the idiots that buy them are the same idiots that think that this kind of mass approach to finding translation work (regardless of the Agency's and your characteristics/specialty/etc) works.

Thanks Alex. I thought it must have been something like that. Didn't know that such lists were available for purchase! Seems strange that my old e-mail address is on one though...

Not buying, I think. Feb 18, 2011

I'm guessing this has something to do with this:
February 17, 2011

Dear Translator,

This is to inform you about the latest, February 2011, release of the database of translation agencies.

The database already includes 6,687 translation agencies with contact details, available for download in a single xls/csv and doc/rtf file.

Majority of the translation agencies are listed with agency name, contact person, e-mail address, URL, phone, postal address, profile etc.

Contact the suitable agencies to offer collaboration and to register with those interested in your services.

If only 2% of translation agencies from our database give you jobs, that will mean more than 133 customers for your language services (and they might become your lifetime customers).

All translation agencies from our database have agreed to be listed in the database or have registered themselves directly.

The investment into the database can bring you a large number of new translation, proofreading, interpretation and other freelance jobs.

Buy today before your competitors do and take your translation jobs - follow the payment links at

http://www.TranslationDirectory.com/jobs.htm#04

You must have spent quite a lot of money to become a translator: learning the language, buying books, dictionaries, attending courses, purchasing computer, connecting to the Internet, buying expensive software etc etc. So, why not invest a little bit more to start earning all the money back and making profits?

This purchase can become the best investment you have ever made, and it can pay off after several completed new projects and can be bringing in net profits thereafter.

Please see opinions of other translators who have purchased and used our database - some of the comments are posted at:

http://www.TranslationDirectory.com/jobs.htm#01

http://www.TranslationDirectory.com/testimonials.htm

Obtain your translation projects before other translators take them!

If you had already purchased the full directory, you can obtain the latest version at just 85 Euro by filling out the following form:

https://secure.bmtmicro.com/servlets/Orders.ShoppingCart?CID=1148&CURRENCY=EUR&PRODUCTID=11480304

If you can't afford to buy the full database at once, you can pay in 5 installments:

http://www.TranslationDirectory.com/jobs.htm#04

If you had been offered free lifetime updates - please contact us.

Looking forward to hearing from you - and please forgive us if this message is of no interest to you.

If you no longer wish to receive messages sent through TranslationDirectory.com, you can remove your profile here:

http://www.TranslationDirectory.com/misc/freelance_translator_removal.htm

Thank you for using TranslationDirectory.com!

Got it today, haven't looked into it. But that's my guess.
