I think this job offering is absolutely discriminatory. It does not focus on the translator\'s expertise but supposes that his/her sexual preferences will affect the work performed.

Shameful...

What was it? Sep 27, 2002

You did not mention the job number or anything...

Anyway, if it discriminates on sex, I\'m against it

Bye

all it said was - gay translators only Sep 27, 2002

like - only native speakers need to apply etc... which is perfectly professional, in my opinion.

i also believe that it was a very tactful thing to do - to spare other (non-gay) translators\' blushes, so to speak, because some of the gay parlance could be not only incomprehensible to most straight translators, but it also can be somewhat - hmmm - how shall i say it .... - somewhat \'crude\' - to put it mildly.

take for example - water sports or rimming, let alone different colour codings - immediately understandable to any gay male (not that i am into any of that), but that\'s a kinda thing a straight translator(ess) would have to deal with when translating a hmmm... somewhat explicit gay website.

do you know the meaning? and do you really want to know? why? that\'s when it\'s time to think about the \'gayness test\'.

don\'t see anything shameful at all!

how many did you know of the following? :-

BND - boy-next-dorr

CS - clean shaven

CT/A - can travel / accommodate

GL - good looking

GSOH - good sense of humour

GWM - gay white male

LDU - leather/denim/uniform

LTR - long term relationship

NSc - non-scene

NSm - non-smoker

NTW - no time-wasters

OHAC - own home and car

PA - photo appreciated

SA - straight acting

SL - straight looking

SBM - single black male

VGL - very good looking

WLTM - would like to meet

bb, ff, cp etc.....

Is that \"discriminatory\"? He didn\'t focus on expertise, I\'m afraid. Job gone (maybe Russia or Argentina ).

As long as you are able to decline orders, don\'t worry about political correctness. Old man\'s experience.

And that\'s the link to the job:

If anybody wants to discuss about it, I think, (s)he should know this.

Technical translations - gays only! would be discriminatory.

What a job! Sep 29, 2002

Actually, I was kind of annoyed receiving such an offer on my regular job line.

I think the poster was indeed well fonded in mentionning clearly what he was looking for. He wants a gay translator. That\'s logical enough considering the subject matter.

What I disagree with however, is that this kind of rubish lands on my regular job line.

What\'s next? Nazy web sites? Porn sites? (anyway, I guess this is as close as it can get)

Using a service like Proz, one must know and understand that such a message is going to reach thousand of people, many of which may object to this kind of job.

Hell, the gay community seem to be large enough for them to handle their own matters internally, since the whole \"translation expertise\" needed is a common usage of this type of web sites, they would get on with that job far more efficiently by addressing their own lists AND it would be a free ad at the same time.

Call me \"narrow-minded\" if you like, but I do find this topic offensive.

Dear Sylver, Sep 29, 2002

maybe they posted the job on ProZ because they didn\'t expect so much bigotry within the world of translation. It speaks for itself that you associate gay guesthouses with porn. And the comparison of gays and Nazis when so many died in Nazi extermination camps and are still victimised by Neo-Nazis is just not a very intelligent one, to say the least. Calling you narrow-minded would be an understatement of immense proportions. Homophobic remarks can easily backfire in this profession since, in ca... See more

\'eurotrash\' on channel 4 hosted by a frenchman here in the uk aimed at straight audience can be rather filthy at times, no wonder jean paul gaultier - his co-host initially, finally decided he had better things to do, and left it all to straight folks.

i don\'t think i would accept the job translating subtitles for that programme - way too gross!

i think good linguists need to have this ability of being open-minded about vocabulary in current use.

you wouldn\'t believe the content of anecdotes i had to translate for some otherwise perfectly respectable and straight company directors and government employees after they had a few vodkas.
