I am doing a test translation for a prospective client. He wants the translation sent back with both clean and unclean files. What does that mean exactly?

That means he asks you to do the translation with a translation software, possibly Trados, and keep one copy of the file containing the translation units (unclean) and clean up another copy with the translation software so the source text will be deleted from the file (clean).
