Good day,

My client is asking me for a copy of my ID/passport which will allow his client to have my signature legalised/authenticated, following a sworn translation I did for him. I have been doing this job for a long time, however I have never been asked for a copy of my ID and, to be honest, I'm not very keen on providing a complete stranger with one. In theory, the courts I'm registered with just check in their records and procede with the legalisation, no ID needed.

Have you faced similar cases in the past? How did you tackle them?

Thanks for your comments.

It sounds to me that in your country, your signature is valid if you are a legally sworn translator, regardless of whether it is accompanied by a copy of your ID.

Besides, it can be dangerous to supply a stranger with a copy of your ID and a signature, don't you think? On the other hand, if you buy anything on credit, you have to sign and have them make a copy of your ID anyway.

My attitude here is that a copy of the ID is not necessary for courts to accept the translation (in your country, it seems to me), therefore don't give it. It is what I would call an unusual request.
