Source or target for multilingual word count?

In Canada, in any multilingual combination into French or English, we pay the translator and we charge the client based on the target (official language) word count. We count source when the multilingual combination is from one of the two official languages (French or English). This is the well-established Canadian tradition.

The first of this two options, however, precludes the application of Trados rates, which the clients are increasingly asking, and that we would like to apply when the memory produces good results.

Take the example of German-English for example. How do you, in Europe, handle the application of Trados in this case?

Please forgive my ignorance. Your guidance is much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Kind regards.

How to apply Trados to German into English Feb 25, 2009

Firstly, you run the Trados analysis on the Word document.
Then open "View" and you see at the end of the results, for example, "Chars total 55,000".

Normally you would divide 55,000 by 55, to obtain the number of source lines. However, Trados counted the characters only, and not the spaces inbetween the words. Therefore you add the word count that is given, and this would give you the number of "characters with spaces". You can then divide this by 55 to obtain source lines, the normal charging unit for German into English.

In addition, source lines vs. target words goes approximately like this:

EUR 0.85 per source line = EUR 0.09 per target word
EUR 0.90 per source line = EUR 0.095 per target word
EUR 0.95 per source line = EUR 0.10 per target word
