is it worth investing in the software? if yes, what package would you recommend for professional translation? I am looking for medical and legal glossaries

Probably not for freelancers Jun 17, 2003

A number of large multinational corporations use Systran. This is a machine translation program which to be effective must rely upon controlled language as source text. This means that only certain sentence structures are allowed, and a word can generally have only one meaning. Unless you expect to get a contract from a large company that uses simplified language and can provide you with extensive glossaries, you're probably better off with a translation memory program. There are lots of these on the market. For a comparison, please check out

Press Article on MT/TM Jun 17, 2003

I have written an article on the subject. It can be found under
http://www.globalwords.de/gwo/ibsite/15/show/95.
Global words specialises in using LOGOS, a further development of SYSTRAN, and the results are poor to say the least, i.e. working for them as a reviewer you always end up having to do about 66 per cent of the work manual translation would involve. So only go for it if your client insists and equips you with it.
