Hello,
is there any CAT tool that is able to work with comments in Excel? (I mean those "bubbles" indicated with a red corner of the cell to which a comment is linked.)
Thank you!

MemoQ Nov 13, 2008

Hi Tomas,
MemoQ (www.kilgray.com) can handle them. You need to specify the settings in the Project Wizard > Document import settings.

Hope it helps.

OmegaT Nov 13, 2008

The file must be converted to .ods before translation and back again afterwards, but the comment text is included in the translation.

It can probably be done directly in Excel 2007 format in OmegaT, but I haven't tested it.

Across Nov 13, 2008

Across is another alternative. You can use the default setting to import comments.

Star Transit XV Nov 13, 2008

You can use Star Transit XV as well. As "file type" you must select MS Excel 97/2000/XP/2003.

If you check "Translate comments" in Filter Settings.

Yes, it works.
Translating the comments in Excel 2007 documents is an option, which is On by default.

... does of course as well.
Your question's too easy as all the main ones do. It's no big deal. But if you were to ask which ones can view, sort and filter several InDesign, Framemaker, TagEditor, Powerpoint, Excel and OpenOffice files seamlessly as if they were one big file, and with several target languages at the same time, that might be another matter!

Next question: which can exclude them? Nov 14, 2008

And... in which CAT tools can you exclude them (either by selecting an option or at least by having them identified so that you know to skip them yourself)?

Trados skips them like a breeze using default settings. Meaning one finds the comments in the target file unchanged.

Thanks for all replies!

If you check "Translate comments" in Filter Settings.

Now this sound interesting.
However, being a Trados newbie, how do I achieve this?
When I do to Filter Settings, I see a few fields (Text fields, attribute fields, attribute picklist etc.), but no indication of "Excel comments" or the like. Please can someone advise on how to achieve that kind of inclusion/filtering?
Many thanks.

I would go about that differently: I would first delete all comments from (a copy of) the original file; then translate; then reload the project with the original file and save the result.

I meant the separate tool called SDL Trados Filter Settings: Start - SDL Trados Freelance 2006 - Filters - Filter Settings (the path could be different in Trados 2007).
