Dear translation gurus; if, for the sake of an argument, we say that Trados (SDL) is the best CAT in the industry, which would be the "second best"?:
Simplicity, conversion of TM's, reliability, etc.

Thank you,

Francisco

Friends! May 9, 2011

I think it is quite OK to say that this or that tool is the best. We all say or have said it in the past!

To me, Trados is second best to memoQ.

"for the sake of argument" May 9, 2011

If I agreed with your statement, then I would say memoQ.

The best CAT tool according to http://mox.ingenierotraductor.com/2009/09/mox-calvo-best-cat-tool.html

IMHO, SDL Studio is the second best CAT, and then comes MemoQ.

I don't know if Trados (SDL) is the best CAT in the industry! It is, however, a requirement by a large number of translation bureaus (do they get a % of Trados profits? Is that why it is so expensive?).

My preference, in any case, is for Wordfast, which I find easy to use and is also to an extent compatible with Trados. For the licence fee (much less costly than Trados and renewable every 3 years (even free if you use Wordfast Anywhere) you get both a Classic and a Pro version.

Let's first decide who's best, and then... May 10, 2011

In my personal opinion, Trados used to be the best due to its extremely ergonomic user interface, until SDL bought it and started crippling it with the kludgy Studio features. By extension, the second best has to be Wordfast Classic, which replicates the look and feel of Trados.

All others - Wordfast Pro, OmegaT, memoQ, SDLX, Déjà Vu, Transit, you name it - have a more eye-straining user interface. My experience with them isn't really up to date (except Wordfast Pro, which a certain large international outsourcer, let it remain nameless, decided to ram down the throats of its vendors), but it looks like OmegaT is a close third. I sincerely hope it catches up with the main competitors fairly soon.

my opinions May 10, 2011

Few people can compare more than two translation tools, as they will compare only the ones they are using. I do have Wordfast, OmegaT, Transit NXT, SDL Trados, Trados Studio, MemoQ and Accross.

I've little experience with OmegaT and Across very much, thus I'm not able give my opinion.

Trados Studio might have many tempting features, but is not the "number one" in terms of simplicity and reliability. In fact, it is a very dificult tool to learn, thus making very difficult to learn all the features that might be of a great help for us. It is not a reliable tool, as it crashes all the time. You need to have the most updated OS, and be carefull with the Java version you have in your PC. And the owner is obliged to use a PC or laptop with Windows.

MemoQ: many translators and translation agencies are very happy with it. Unfortunatedly my personal experience is not good: the first job, a huge translation job, was wrongly sincronized online by my client the very last day I was working on it and I lost all my proofread work (There were 40.000 words; I could recover part of my job using the TM I had exported to a Trados format). Also, I find it very slow when I have to add tags for fuzzy matches. It has lovely features, though, like the filter that shows all the translation segments with a certain word, or certain status. Very good technical support.

Wordfast the best in terms of simplicity and reliability. It can be used in any OS, be it Mac, Windows or Linux. And there is a free online version which allows you to translate even if you don't have Wordfast installed. The translation process is seamless. I wish it had some features present in other translation tools, such as automatich replacement of figures (I'm not sure if the latest version includes it). I never had a crash using Wordfast. The technical support is great.

Transit NXT is great in terms os reliabilty, but it is not a very simple to use. I love how it handles the terminology, and I use it almost everyday. The technical support is great.

I do not have Swordfish, but translators who own it have selected it as the second best in a poll last year. They really love it. And it can be used in Windows, Mac or Linux. The price is great too. And they claim that the technical support is great, too.

I do not have DejaVu, but their users, when comparing it to other CAT tools, prefer it.

Regarding conversion of TMs, I never had a single problem converting my translation memories to TMX and importing them to my CAT tools. Sure, there are some issues with tags,

Regards

Clarisa

Different order... May 10, 2011

There is no best tool at all.
All who love MemoQ shall be lucky with it, same applies to Wordfast or Metatexis.
But I would also love to be left with my favourite Studio.
I do not attack MemoQ, even if I easily would find reasons to do so.
What on earth do we need al such discussions for? Just to make us angry?
There is no purpose in discussing the superiority of Mac to PC or the superiority of CAT a to CAT b.
When we start to discuss on this, we can as well discuss, why did you chose English or Spanish as your favourite language...

I wholeheartedly agree with the two points made by Jerzy I cite above. There are quite a few (both objective and subjective) criteria by which you can assess CAT tools (or any piece of software, coming to this). I am so tired of flameware of all kinds, to be honest, that I will even not mention the CAT tool I like the best.

Second best May 10, 2011

Dear gurus, partners,
I didn't men to open a can of worms on "who or what is best".
Actually, my question was legit, and geared into know more about MY NEXT CAT. Why would I not ask the people that have, and work with such tools?
My father used to tell me, "do you want to flatter someone, ask him (her) for an advise; that's what I did.

You see, I've using the "old" Trados 2007. I kind of "mastered it" (if there's is such thing), but now with the new windows platforms, etc..... you know the rest of the story...

I am seriously looking for the replacement, even as we "speak". One that I can use it with Windows or Mac, etc.

Personally, I thank you for your savvy advise, and I think I have made up my mind.

Thank you guys, in the spirit of cooperation. By the way, I didn't feel anybody getting "angry" over.

Porzincerely,

Francisco

The best one for you is the one that best suits you and that you like best May 10, 2011

There is no 'best' CAT tool.

You have to look at try some and make a choice from that. Different people prefer different things. Some people prefer simple tools, others prefer more complex tools. The disadvantages of one product may not be particularly relevant to your situation or working style. The advantages of one particular product may make it the only suitable choice for you.

For instance (if I have correctly interpreted what you said a couple of posts before) if you want a CAT tool that you can use with Windows or Mac OS (without running Windows on a Mac), this already limits you to Wordfast, Swordfish, Omega and Heartsome AFAIK.

Try as many as you can, as you would when buying a car, TV or any other product. If the company don't issue a free or cheap trial version, then don't bother (most, if not all, do offer some sort of trial version AFAIK).

Look at this website May 10, 2011

I don't think there is one best CAT tool for everyone, much will depend on individual needs, level of technological savvy and most importantly of all what your clients want you to use.

Having said this whenever this kind of discussion comes up I have to point people to this excellent website set up by Jost Zetzsche which lets you see each program at work actually doing the same translation in each program, this is a really good way to let you compare one program to the next.

http://www.translatorstraining.com/sito/index.php

Then you can choose the one you think best suits your needs.
