It won't be a problem if the source file is in Word. The person who is working with Wordfast (Classic) can then read the .tmx TM and deliver a bilingual Word file the agency can clean up in their own Trados (delivering a new .tmx is optional then). This process is quite transparent even for beginners.

As soon as the source file is not in Word (for instance Powerpoint, InDesign, PDF, xml or xliff files) the person who is working with Wordfast will have to use Wordfast Pro for better results, and then full compatibility is more difficult to obtain or will not be possible. (as for myself, I even don't try) (although the translator can always deliver a .tmx TM, but he has to know that this one is not 100% compatible - tags missing).

If the original file is in Excel, one has the choice between either copying the columns to be translated into Word either use WF Pro.

So in my opinion all depends on the source file format.

Hitting the nail's head :) Jun 20, 2011

The OP asked whether it is ok to use WF on a job that was offered as a Trados job. Just ask the PM. Sometimes it won't be a problem, and sometimes it will.

If you feel you cannot "bother" him or her with a question like that, then what does the rest of your cooperation look like?

Thanks, Susan. This is really hitting the nail's head!

Hello René,
IMO, in the situation as you described it in your post, the fault is clearly on the PM's part. The question then would be whether to continue working for that agency or to find other sources of income. But I guess that would mean hijacking this thread too far...

Have a wonderful day!

Hello Stanislav,

Thank you for this clarification. That's really good news. I did not know that yet.

Have a nice sunny day as well!
