Hi all,

I lately read a bit about this new (at least to me) "cloud-based" CAT-Tool, which sounds almost to good to be true.

Hi all,

I lately read a bit about this new (at least to me) "cloud-based" CAT-Tool, which sounds almost to good to be true.

Apparently it supports pretty much every file format and seems to be compatible with other CAT-Tools, i.e. if a client asks you to use Trados, you might as well use XTM Cloud, and they wouldn´t notice. At least that´s what I´ve heard. I have to admit I´m not all that knowledgable when it comes to CAT-Tools.

On top of this it seems to be fairly economically priced. You don´t have to buy a programme, you just pay a monthly fee, etc.

I was wondering if anyone, who has tried it or is in fact working with it, could give me further insights, positive or negative.

Thanks.

PS: As so often I didn´t really seem to find the right forum that really fits the topic, so moderators, please feel free to move it to a more appropriate place.

I have used XTM and I still prefer my PC-based CAT tool.

Best regards,

It doesn't look very economical to me. The €10/month price only gives you an allowance of 10,000 words/month. Translators who have this output either charge very very high rates, or have very very little work.
I imagine most full-time translators would have to go for the €30/month with a 60,000 word limit, and even then there would be some months that would exceed this limit, so you'd be looking at an extra €22 those months.
N.B., These prices don't include VAT, although that probably isn't a problem for most of us.

So, one/two years of paying the XTM monthly fee will add up to the price of any other CAT tool.

Edited to add:
I forgot to mention that when I was looking up the price list on the XTM website http://www.xtm-intl.com/resources/xtmcloudpricelist I noticed that the freelance version doesn't have the option of sharing TMs in real time with other users (which I thought was the one big advantage of this application). So you'd have to pay a small group fee, and then the price rockets!

for your input so far.

Thanks, Laura, for the links to the other related threads.

@Emma. I would say that I have a reasonable amount of work per month, but since many of my current clients use their own Tools I would only be using XTM for those jobs which don´t come in a proprietary tool already. Therefore 10,000 or at worst 25,000 words a month would do me fine I think. Which would mean I could get away with Euro 10 or 17.
Of course for someone using it for each

Of course for someone using it for each and every job the price would be disproportionately high.
