I am new to using TRADOS with PDF files, any advice on where to start ?

...The question of PDFs has come up a lot, but basically you have to convert the PDF to Word or RTF. You can convert manually or use special software (which you have to buy - we tested a downloadable trial version recently, but in the end decided to convert manually).

Converting manually means copying and pasting, then reformatting the whole text. Assuming your PDF allows you to copy (some are protected).

conversion there is no other way. Convert the doc useing pdf2txt, which is a shareware, I do not have the link though, but it is not bad, and process with Trados
