New approach to fields of expertise Sep 22, 2008

Hi all,

In the last questions we are moving in the direction of filtering notifications and access to the questions to users who have declared the corresponding field among the "expert" fields in their profiles.

Hi all,

In the last questions we are moving in the direction of filtering notifications and access to the questions to users who have declared the corresponding field among the "expert" fields in their profiles.

A new feature about to be released will be that of the "related fields". This means that a question will have a specific field of expertise but may have related fields that will be also included in the filter (notifications and access to the question).

For instance a question with primary field "telecommunications" may also be related to "computers: software" and to "Computers: systems, networks"

This will be only relate to notifications and access (and in the future to searches in the glossary), but the points will be assigned to the primary field.

Another novelty will be that when a profile owner adds a new "specialty" or "working" field of expertise, then (s)he will be blocked for 3 days to participate in glossary-building questions that are filtered by that particular field of expertise. This aims to preventing users from modifying their profiles in order to "follow" the specialties requested in the questions.

Regards,
Enrique

I can't give any comments on some answers, i.e. http://www.proz.com/kudoz/english_to_chinese/cinema_film_tv_drama/2843710-holdover_audience.html
What's wrong with it?

Hi! Han Li,

I can't make comments either, because I hasn't specified advertising as my specialty. please see below for your reference.

Special characteristics of this term posting:
To suggest a translation, or enter peer comments, participants must:
... work in this pair (Your profile shows that you do)
... report a "specialty" level of expertise in the subject field (You have not)
... are native speakers of English or Chinese (You have reported that you are)

You can find the simliar information specific to you below the question.

best regards,

Donglai Lou

New feature: glossary-building KudoZ (GBK) glossaries Oct 29, 2008

Dear members,

You are kindly invited to test the new glossary-building KudoZ (GBK) glossaries. This option can be reached by going to the KudoZ tab at the top of the page and selecting GBK glossary.

The GBK questions are from English into other languages but, since they are based on concepts, it is possible to perform a term search among languages such as Chinese to Hungarian and vice versa.

It is also possible to consult language glossaries, selecting a language and field of expertise to view all the terms entered for that combination.

Once a term is displayed, it is possible to compare it with the term entry in other languages.

Only languages which have glossary entries are shown in the search menu.

This is a new program, so the volume of terms is still relatively small, but expected to grow significantly.

Please consider participating in the GBK program to show and share your expertise.

Regards,
Enrique

Right. One of the challenges of this program is finding the specialists in each area and having them participating, both by answering and by peer grading answers.

I am sure my answer is absolutely right, maybe it's just no one has right to submit "agree".

You are right Oct 31, 2008

Han Li,

I think you are right although I "do not meet the criteria to answer and peer grade on this question".

Specialists only... Nov 4, 2008

I don't think it's appropriate to 'exclude' 'non-specialists' from answering or peer grading answers just because they don't claim to be a 'specialist' in a field.

As everyone can claim to be a 'specialist' in a certain field, this rule is not so useful to 'filter' out potentially irrelevant answers.

Relaxing the restriction on peer comments Nov 12, 2008

Thanks again for your feedback, that is in line with comments received in the survey on the GBK program.

Accordingly, the glossary-building KudoZ system has been modified in such a way that users with the field of expertise defined as "working" will also be allowed to provide peer comments to help select the best among the available answers once the 72-hours submission period is over.

These users will be also included in the relevant notifications.
