A few suggestions May 15, 2009

Sherwin,

第三句肯定是没什么问题的. 当然任何一个句子都有多种表达方法. "This city was totally destroyed." 也不例外. 比如可以说:

This city's infrastructure was completely destroyed.
The entire city was wiped out.

其它几句并不能说是"中国式英语", 但稍加改动就更好些. 改写这种句子完全取决于语境、上下文、或者个人喜好, 举例如下:

Now, we are working hard at English.
Currently, we're putting a lot of effort into our English studies.
We're doing everything to improve our English these days.

Various shoes are sold in this shop.
Different kinds(or brands) of shoes are sold in this store.
This store carries all sorts of footwear.

Talking in class must be firmly banned.
Talking in class without permission is strictly forbidden.
No disturbances during class, please.

At the moment we are working hard on our English.
This shop sells a variety of shoes.
This city was completely destroyed.
We must strictly prohibit talking in class.

(Nice question, Sherwin.)

感谢前辈的回复。
我最近翻看美国 Joan Pinkham 写的 Guide to Chinglish,中文名“中式英语之鉴”,看得目瞪口呆!
比如上述的几句话作者认为都是中国式英语,并分析如下:
1) Now,we are working hard at English.(Now 多余,因为 are working 已经表示现在正在进行)

2) Various shoes are sold in this shop.(various多余,因为shoes的“s"已经表示复数)

3) This city was totally destroyed. (totally多余,因为 add nothing to destroyed,因为destroyed已包含了totally的意思,并说中国人滥用程度副词);我就纳闷了,毁坏的程度应该是不同的,彻底地毁坏、完全毁坏、部分毁坏都是应该有的,怎么说 这里就不能用totally呢?

4)必须严格禁止课上讲话 Talking in class must be firmly banned.(firmly多余,---)

Actually, in most circumstances, you cannot be too short or curt towards others. Otherwise you run the risk of being rude and awkward. As a matter of fact, what some people term "Chinglish" - often considered a disparaging term by many, BTW - exactly has the tendency of sounding curt and broken.

英文和中文一样, 各种场合有不同的最为适宜的用法. 最重要的是看具体的 context. 讲话人究竟想表达什么意思是最关键的. 有的情况下话说得越简练越好, 但人的思想并不局限于买鞋这类琐事, 不可能总是靠最简单的句型和最基本的词汇在日常工作和生活上与人顺利沟通.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/destroyed

destroyed本身就是徹底地毀壞的意思﹐相當于報廢﹐因此沒必要用程度副詞。如果字典上的翻譯是毀壞﹐說明中文字典的翻譯不夠準確。

about “NOW” May 17, 2009

Sherwin Zhou wrote:

Positively no XXing.

Well, what does she expect you to say? "Shoes are sold in this shop"?

Of course it would then be a basic elemental English sentence. But why not just say "This is a shoe store", or "This store carries shoes", provided it also sells other merchandise?

Obviously when someone uses the expression "different kinds of shoes", the person is trying to convey a different meaning in a different context. It is okay as far as I know.

Like I mentioned, it's one thing if the author is belaboring the point of being concise and railing against being superfluous, but another when it comes to what is considered acceptable speech patterns and correct English used by native English speakers.

I can think of a situation where someone could easily say, "Macy's carries all kinds of shoes. Let's go there." ... When people say something like this, it typically means the store carries a wide variety of shoes to choose from - or "a wide selection of shoes", since we're on the topic of avoiding verbosity.icon_biggrin.gifhttp://www.comfortshoegallery.com/

Let us be your full service shoe store. We pride ourselves on our helpful, friendly customer service. And we go out of our way to treat our customers well. We will special order colors and sizes not in stock to make sure customers get what they want. We carry all kinds of shoes, for women and men: from athletic shoes to high heels, mules, clogs, sandals, boots... you name it, we've got it.... or can get it for you.

And we carry all your favorite brands, including labels that are hard to find and/or you'll want to know about, such as Dansko, Clarks, Naot, Haflinger, Rieker, Indigo, Privo, Wolky, Pikolinos, Finn Comfort, Think, El Naturlista, Vital, !804, Earth, MBT, Tatami, Papillio, New Balance, Brooks, Chaco, Keen, BeautiFeel, P.G. Lite, Cambrian, Arcopedico, Pedors, Ex sensible, Old Friend, Eric Michael, Orthotic Insoles, Superfeet, Binamic, Tacco, Pedag, Ameribag, Hobo, Smartwool, Hotsox.

"Talking in class must be firmly banned" May 17, 2009

The most inappropriate word in this sentence is the verb "banned", not the adverb "firmly". Of course "firmly" is not the word I would have chosen to use here either.

In customary English usage, you "ban" drugs; you "ban" alcohol; you "ban" firearms; you "ban" sexual harassment; you don't "ban" talking.

If you want to maintain the same structure of the sample sentence, a more appropriate choice of words for the verb in this instance would be "discouraged", "disallowed", "not be permitted", etc..
