客户让我校对一篇稿子,是一篇信托契约,原文大段大段都没有标点符号,最长的一个段落总计26行,每行估计15-20个单词,没有一个标点符号。这种文体以前也见过,不稀奇。稀奇的是中文译稿也是没有标点符号的。我要是拿到稿子马上看一眼就好了,当时就可以退回去,让客户转告翻译,把标点符号加上去后再拿来校对。这下可好,两天过去了,不好跟客户说这个,只要硬着头皮先看一段中文,点上标点,再对照英文!感觉自己成了中文系古典文献专业的博士生一样,没事给古籍点标点!

Katrin的那个话我也看到了,不过觉得有点奇怪,她(他)的语言对是德文和中文,跟我的对不上,所以没往心里去。要是这话是跟Bin说的,就对上了。

具体对你而言,她的话也许不是 rubber check。也许她会让你做中英文项目。不过 editor 要应付的很可能是 Google Translator Toolkit 或其它机器翻译的产物。 与其如此,还不如自己做翻译、自己编辑Google Translator Toolkit 的产物?icon_wink.gif

我昨天给Google Translator Toolkit上传了一篇技术资料,但看了一会儿“产物”就晕了,索性全部删掉,自己手翻。

做editing的经历,总的来说是不愉快多于愉快,能避免就避免。

很多业主的如意算盘是找一位廉价翻译做 translating,然后再找一位水平高的翻译做 editing。因为你做 editing 总不能比做 translating 报价还高吧? 可是,做这种 editing 所化的时间往往比 translating 还要多,而且树一旦长歪了,即使你用斧头砍也未必能直、也未必好看。你若砍得狠了,那 translator 还会反弹。所以,还不如自己在一张白纸上画出最新最美的图画。我对于 editing 的 offer,一般也都是拒绝的,除非我知道那翻译是谁。

我做editing的经历大致如此,因此我最喜欢做的还是translation。
