I am a newbie on this site hoping to get some advice for postgraduate studies. A little background information:

My mother tongue is Cantonese, and my English is fluent, while my Mandarin is passable. I am currently in my last semester of a BA, majoring in Linguistics + Communication & Cultural Studies, and I would like to get some advice on which MA programme to choose, in particular for English/Chinese translation.

Thank you for your help!

You are lucky. HK universities have programs of MA in translation.
Find them yourself.

CUHK/City U Nov 3, 2009

I did the same kind of research 3 years ago, and I chose CUHK's MA program.

CUHK and City U's taught master's programs have run for years and earned reputation in the field (at least that's the case in Hong Kong). One of my classmates had actually got a BA in Translation from Lingnan U before he joined the CU program for the better "fame" of the latter.

If I'm correct, HKU doesn't have a department/school of translation per se and doesn't offer taught postgrad program in translation. HKU SPACE has offered postgrad cert/dip programs in translation for more than a decade though.

BTW, my experience at CUHK was great.

Yes, I have heard many good things about CU's MA programme. Does it focus specifically on translation between English and Chinese? I am unsure if I should be looking at programmes that are specialised, because I have absolutely no background in translation.

Also, would you happen to know of other similar MA programmes that are being offered overseas? Most of the UK programmes I looked into are focused on the translation between English and other European languages, which isn't what I'm looking for. Would the US or Australia be more suitable for me?

Thanks again!

握个手~ I also intend to pursue an MA in translation and/or interpretation next year. CUHK's Department of Translation is very prestigious in the whole of Asia. Actually, it offers both an MA and an MPhil in translation(2 years). I believe they're basically translation degrees, with some elective interpreting courses.

If you would want to learn interpreting too, as I do, you may consider Monterey Institute of International Studies(MIIS), which offers a 2-year MA in Translation & Interpretation. It also offers a MA in Translation, in Conference Interpretation, and in Translation & Localization. They even allow double degrees, which means getting a MA in translation and a MBA or MPA in three years. I believe MIIS is very well-known all over the world for its T/I programs.

As to UK, I know a couple of universities which offer one-year MA in translation/interpretation with the language pair of Chinese and English, such as Westminster, Bath, and Newcastle.
