Good Flash work, but the English is horrible! Dec 2, 2003

Hello, HymnLau and Yongmei,

With my curiosity, I took a look at the website. The Flash work is pretty good. But the English is horrible, horrible! I tried to read it and had to give up quickly.

I heard the brand name of “Shuanggou Daqu” 20 years ago when I was in China. It was supposedly a well-known Chinese hard liquor company. I was simply amazed that such English could be used in their website. What is their judgment? Well, think again, hard liquor, Daqu, Baijiu... would it be possible that the translator had one glass too many before he started with the translation? Or the Director might think their readers would be too drunk to read anyway.

Can someone in Jiangsu Province contact this company and offer a help? I am sure this company has the money to pay for a professional translator.

Kevin

Money is not the problem Dec 3, 2003

钱,没有问题。有问题的是人们的观念。说实在的,翻译在社会上的地位很低。很多有才华的人都不愿从事这行。在大学里,翻译一本几十万字的著作,不如别人写一篇几千字的论文(只要在核心刊物发表),对翻译专业的老师也是这种要求。这是很不合理的。很多人都以为只要有一本字典就能做翻译了!企业老总有这种想法的不在少数。有些学英语的也是初生牛犊不怕虎,自我感觉好得很,拿来什么都敢翻。

Zhoudan,

Quality of the Translation Dec 22, 2003

In fact, I am sure there are still other examples of bad translations around. Sometimes, when I am doing research on internet and come across (quote Kevin) "horrible, horrible" translations, I would write to the company to let them know. And no one replies!! Amazing! Don't they care anymore????

Two days ago, I bought a U-disk and in the instruction manual, there was an unforgivable mistake! The Chinese text says that this U-disk has one switch but the English text says TWO!! Now, this can't be the error from dictionaries or machines translations, can it?????? It's simply a big careless mistake on the translator's part!!

As a translator, one should take pride in his or her work. Every piece of work is your very own masterpiece.
