I have an urgent Chinese>English legal translation project (files attached). Unfortunately, my China-based translator failed to deliver and is now out for the Chinese New Year and my client cannot wait until next week for these translations. Would you be available to handle this translation in the next couple of days?

话说回来,总还是有人会卖酱油给他的。这种团结即使到了黄花菜盛开的时候也不可能实现! :D

同意,可惜没有可能实现 Mar 1, 2011

国内的翻译公司就是那么牛啊,上招聘网站发个信息,一天收一百封求职信很轻松。
咱们努力维系好老客户才是最重要:)

非常理解jyuan_us的感受!

Minimum charge for overhead Mar 2, 2011

There's an easy solution to this kind of problem, IMO.

Charge a minimum fee, say $50, $30, or even as low as $10, for each translation job, large or small. Reasonable clients would certainly understand.

If you already have a minimum charge, stick to it. Raise the amount if you believe it is too low.

Yes, I agree. If so, the price could be equivalent to 0.25 euro/word, or even 25.00 euro/word if only a few words need to be translated. That would certainly make a translator feel good.

pk,

Yes, I agree. I think it's fine to vent one's frustration. Some of the money-grubbing tactics deployed by some agencies, if not predatory or exploitive, are indeed inconsiderate.

But I also think the more established translators should be able to be more assertive in how they want to conduct their own business. IMO, they certainly have more room to negotiate, and certainly are in a position to turn down some of the rinky-dink jobs that aren't even worth their while to send a bill for.

Of course one needs to be mindful that there's always a nice way of getting one's message across to a potential client.
