1. Given his long standing prejudices against women, I don’t think his argument against a female college president is valid.

2. A scattered distribution is to be expected for this species, given its life history and habitat requirements.

3. Faced with increasingly complex and burdensome U.S. tax rules, along with a renewed emphasis on compliance, many American expats are wondering if it makes sense to give up their U.S. citizenship. High-profile departures like that of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin (who renounced his U.S. citizenship prior to his company's IPO) have drawn attention to a step that was once considered only by the very wealthy or criminally inclined.

以前学英语印象最深刻的是:Viewed from mountain.

大家多举举例子啊.

Granted the request is a little weird, does it really justify such indignation?

redred,

Long time, no see. Hope everything is going well for you.

Could you please tell us why you need these examples? It might help with focusing on the issue.

Taken at face value, much English taught in Chinese colleges seems silly. It is only when you look hard at the arbitrary and illogical claims that you realise just how damaging they are.

"Viewed from mountain"系什麼鳥語?

http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-promissory-estoppel.htm

In common language, "promissory" means "related to a promise," and "estoppel" is a legal term that essentially means an enforced bar or ban. Judges use the doctrine to ban one person from going back on a promise. Seen from a different angle, the doctrine is a tool to enforce promises, effectively requiring both parties to do the things they said they would. It is often seen as an exception to black-letter contract law.

Add variety to your writing Mar 16, 2013

Here's a pdf file I found on the web that touches on the subject of leading past participles ...

http://fwi.swcs.us/~jennie.joseph/S084F878E.0/notes.pdf

6 Sentence Patterns To Add Variety to Your Writing

2. -ed phrase opener (past participle phrase)
example sentences:
Baffled by what had happened, Francis sat in silence with a dumb look on his face.
Bothered by the ants, Larry brought out the industrial can of RAID ant spray.
Caught with his hand in the cookie jar, the boy pleaded innocence with his mom.
Pattern: -ed phrase, complete sentence (-ed phrase, subject + predicate) Hint: Many past participles are irregular forms. For example: 'catch' becomes 'caught' as a past participle.

...

Sentence Variety: Sentence Beginnings

2. Begin with a participle or an adjective. A sentence can begin with a participle or an adjective if the word is in a phrase that refers to the subject of the independent clause.
Examples
Waiting for the movie to begin, my friends ate popcorn.
Forced to work late, they ordered a pepperoni pizza.
Aware of the problems, they nevertheless decided to continue.

的确算是“毁”人不倦,哈哈。

感觉我们学的语法书很有问题,很多中式英语其实都是语法书和英语教学的结果。另外诸位同仁们如果有觉得不错的语法书还希望多推介推介,包括英文版的,最好是比较详尽的那种。

凭语感 Mar 17, 2013

Hi Stevens,

Thanks for yor quotations.

多看英语原文,凭语感写英文很有帮助.国人指正别人的英语语法,理论一大套:什么定语,谓语,状语从句,说得头头是道

对baffled by, bothered by, caught with容易懂;

Forced to work late = they are force to work late,类似于首贴这个句子
3. Faced with increasingly complex and burdensome U.S. tax rules, along with a renewed emphasis on compliance, many American expats are wondering if it makes sense to give up their U.S. citizenship.
即:People are faced with increasingly complex.....

Translated into English = the term is translated into English. Seen from a different angle类拟于Viewed from mountain(从山上鸟瞰)的用法。

多谢Phil Hand的推荐,在中国大陆某电商网站搜索了一下,居然有这本书出售。虽然价钱比亚马逊要贵,但是评价真不错。

这种句型是成立的,但 mountain 是可数名词,所以前面应加一个冠词。例如:

http://www.chuckallan.com/travel/GrandTeton/utahsign.html
Viewed from a mountain to the north of downtown, the Wasatch Mountains are seen on the left with the state capitol in the center.
