In a diesel, fuel ignites spontaneously when it is injected into the combustion chambers. The way the fuel mixes with air is crucial to how it burns, so knowing how the fuel sprays out is important for boosting efficiency and reducing pollution.

The team’s research was funded by the automotive systems company Robert Bosch in Stuttgart. To simplify measurements, they used a modified version of a standard fuel-injector nozzle that had only one hole rather than the usual five or six.

Fuel distribution in the initial jet is critical to how the fuel spreads through the chamber to be burnt. A better understanding could lead to new injector nozzle and chamber designs that improve fuel efficiency and reduce pollution, says Vasilyev.

这一段不大好理解,试译如下:

所谓以超音速前进的末缘速度比前缘快好几倍,是相对的,那是因为前缘减速了,而不是“后缘运转速度加快了好几倍达到了超声速”。就好像高速公路上驰在前面的汽车突然减速,使后面紧紧尾随的汽车相继撞到前面去,有时几十辆、甚至上百辆汽车会撞在一起。

首先,这里的jet不是喷射机,而是喷射流(实际上柴油是以雾状喷入气缸的)。你一说喷射机,我的心思就飞到了巴黎,去看人驾机穿过凯旋门

另外,为了保险起见,Jin Wang的名字最好不译,因为Wang可以是王,但也可以是“汪”,甚至“望”。此人姓金也说不定。

还有,你把“obscuring what's going on”译为“掩盖了燃烧状况的可见度”,这是加以发挥了。从下文看,根本就没有发生燃烧。如果原文比较笼统,你也可以而且应该译得笼统些。我认为译为“掩盖了真实情况”即可。科技文章的翻译没有改善原文的义务。其它文章的翻译也应尽量保持原味。例如,原文中的”I”如果应该翻译为“俺”的,就不宜译为“鄙人”。

暂时就想到这些。待有空再谈。

谢谢Shang! 但对于柴油机,我是外行。虽然是篇科普文章,但读起来也很费解,难免要说外行话。建议Joyce 在考试时若遇到这类文章,尽量选择别的更有把握的题目。

喷射器就是外行话。Shang 说得对,fuel-injector = 喷油器。
此外,Chamber 译为气缸也未尝不可。

“柴油机内部的惊人发现”,这不符合中文的习惯,我看原来的翻译“有关柴油机的惊人发现”似乎比较好。

尽管工程师们在提高柴油机效率,减少污染方面作了很多努力,但一直未找到问题的症结所在。

这个翻译似乎与原文意思不符,可否翻成:
为了制造更加干净、更富效率的柴油机,工程师们进行了不断的努力,但结果竟是缘木求鱼、劳而无功。

这样翻译,跟着的下一段首一句“一项新的研究发现。。。。”,就顺理成章了。

我对柴油机这东西是一窍不通(咱不谈其他方面的,不然没有可取之处了),昨天翻译时,发现使用词典的频率有特多增加。不准笑!!

都是Shaun的错,他提到金山词霸,我才记起我下载过,只是从来没有用过。现在好了,我不喜欢纸词典了,考试时该怎么办?

怎么又回到考试这事上了?你看我,老喽。
