Bonne lecture

A Textbook of Translation、Mona Baker 的 In Other Words: A Coursebook on Translation、Roger T. Bell 的 Translation and Translating: Theory and Practice 等。

When he has taken his exercise and is drinking his tea or his beer, and lighting his pipe---

Codes of ethics and translation practice Oct 24, 2005

Regarding principles, many translators' associations have codes of ethics. They tend to emphasise faithfulness to the source text (no additions, omissions or alterations), the role of the translator as a channel or conduit between the writer and reader, and the translator's duties to be impartial ie not biased, and to preserve confidentiality.

Regarding a reference, there is the Translation Journal:
http://64.233.187.104/search?q=cache:MHKDbw5g3Z4J:accurapid.com/journal/%20translators%20journal&hl=en

Regarding practice, I think it involves reading, writing and communication skills. People need to really understand the source text and have the language skills and knowledge to convey it well in the target text. I tend to regard many texts as a communication between writer and reader, so I try to understand the writer's mind and craft and convey that to the reader, so that the reader gets the full package: meaning, language, and genre/document type. Some people say you need to be curious and interested in all kinds of subjects to be a good translator - I suppose it helps.I think it is good to work with text-types and topics you are familiar with. Some would say you need to be patient and willing to do research.

There is no required language or style for translators. It is largely determined by the text, but it is also partly an individual thing, I believe. So I suggest, make sure you capture the original flavour of the text, then write in a way you feel happy with - it's your judgement call. Simple is often safer and more natural. Difficult words and grammar are often not successful in my view. When translating into English, I try to avoid complicated sentences and long latinate words which confuse the sense and disrupt the flow for the reader. When translating Chinese literature into English I try to keep the original force, style, pace, balance, descriptive qualities, narrative interest etc. Read the translation aloud, some people say. It's possibly good advice.
