In my experience.... Aug 6, 2006

I've taught in five different schools in the two years I've been in China and I've always been treated fairly and with the utmost respect.

The only reason for leaving each of them was to move to another city and then to translate full-time.

The last school I worked for left the door open for me to return should I ever want to and we parted on very good terms. Admittedly it was an exceptional private school for adults which makes all the difference.

I have never heard any bad stories from other foreign teachers that I've worked with in the past. In fact it's usually the other way around! Foreign teachers have a bad reputation in China for not abiding to signed contracts, having excessive demands and for just upping and leaving when the mood takes them without any regard to the Chinese teachers and more importantly the students.

I think foreigners come here with the attitude of easy work, good money and an equivalent western lifestyle...way too high expectations. This is still a developing country after all, although developing rapidly it is still classified 3rd world.

In my opinion if foreigners educated themselves about the country before they actually came here then alot of them probably wouldn't come because they'd realise it's not such an easy ride and if they still wanted to come then they would do their homework and make a better choice about what area to go to and what schools to apply for.

Everyone loves to read horror stories about how foreigners are treated in a country that's not their own but for every one of them there are countless opposing positive stories. The sad thing is that they're not the stories that make news!

Positive experiences Aug 6, 2006

I taught English in China for four years (up to July 2000), and, like Mark, had really positive experiences. I taught at universities, language schools and companies, and was always paid well and treated with respect.

Some foreign teachers I knew did encounter problems. These were sometimes due to language schools exploiting them, but I think it is fair to say that most problems arose due to a lack of understanding. Most of the teachers encountering problems had no knowledge of

Most of the teachers encountering problems had no knowledge of either the Chinese language or culture.

Dodgy companies exist all over the world. I personally feel that when people go to live and work abroad, they sometimes leave their common sense at home and accept contracts/conditions that they never would in their home country. Then, when problems do arise, they have no way of dealing with them and no support network.

Is it really that strange for men to be in business together? Particularly in this business, doesn't it make more sense to have a native English brain and a native Chinese brain working together?

There are plenty of excellent translators out there working on their own but the work they produce will never compare to that of two natives working together:)

That's why our business took off so rapidly and has been so successful in just a few months:)
