I have an EN>ZH translation of an index. However, the problem is that both the translator and proofreader left it in English alphabetical order. Here is an example:

I am thinking of rearranging the index according to hanyu pinyin. It will take a lot of time, and I don't think I can charge the client extra for this. Do you think this is necessary? What is the best way to do it?

Are you referring to the "Region and Language Option" icon in the CONTROL PANEL? I am using German Windows, so I am a bit lost...

In Windows XP
1.
In Regional and Language options->
Under 'Languages" tab
make sure you have select both
> "Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai), AND
> Install files for East Asian Languages
Then Click Ok. If the fonts have not be installed, it will ask you for the CD.
2.
In "Advanced" tab for non-unicode options
Select "Chinese (Taiwan)" If you are a CHT user (TW + HK)
Select "Chinese (PRC)" If you are a CHS user (China)
ok..then restart
The above steps somewhat similar in Windows 2000. I hope this help.

Cool! I did what Bill and Chance taught me and it worked! It was amazing to see how Excel sort Chinese text. Thanks to all of you!!
Unfortunately, I don't think I can use Chance's method. The problem now is that some items have sub-items. If I just copy and paste them into Excel for sorting, I will mix them up.
Guess I have to do this manually... There goes my weekend.

隐士说得对，在word里就可以完成，而且可以排sub-items。在word帮助里查“排列”关键字后，会有详细说明。

Nope, don't have to say sorry. You've been a great help. It's good that I learned something. I tried to sort the index, but it did not work. The whole thing got messed up.
