"床虱" Jan 3, 2011

文字是不错 - 写得挺滑稽、好笑的. 不过 bed bugs 北方一般叫 "臭虫".

They say bed bugs are making a comeback. It's a big problem around the world.

Western Expatriates Working in China Jan 17, 2011

http://www.cnn.com/2011/LIVING/01/17/americans.move.to.china/index.html?hpt=C2

(CNN) -- Worried that her job might be cut in Texas, IT professional Elisa Sumner took a big step by deciding to work on the other side of the world in Shanghai, China.

Sumner's high-tech company in Austin, Texas, was laying off people in her area of the business and hiring aggressively in Asia. The 45-year-old decided to take a job in Shanghai and move with her company, even though she could have eventually found work elsewhere in the United States.

Sumner's husband, Joel Sumner, a senior research and development manager, followed her to China with a job that has evolved into something "bigger" than his old one.

In addition to their careers, Elisa Sumner said the move was a chance at a "new and interesting" life experience for both of them, because they had never lived outside the United States together.

"I probably could have found another job in Austin, but it would have taken some time to find a position given my skill set and seniority," Sumner said.

The couple, married 12 years, arrived in China with just three suitcases each (and a small shipment of items) and left their two adult children behind for their new overseas careers.

So far, they're glad they made the move two years ago and say, "It has been an amazing experience filled with a lot of adventure."

How common is the Sumners' story?

...

Kennedy said there used to be a very small Western expat community in Beijing and Shanghai, but those communities have grown substantially, and smaller communities have emerged in other Chinese coastal and inland cities.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/dec/07/end-noughties-name-next-decade

Goodbye noughties, hello ... tens? Twenty-tens? Teens? What are we going to call the next decade?

Laura Barton The Guardian, Monday 7 December 2009

This is a difficult age. As we bid farewell to the noughties, it is time to ponder the question of how to address the decade to come. Are these the Tens or the Teens? Should we plump for the Twenty-tens, or even, perhaps, the Xs? Maybe in this cash-strapped, media-drenched age we ought to consider having the decade sponsored, the Ben 10s, perhaps, in honour of the popular animated children's series?

The last time we faced such a decision, in 1909, the concept of the teenager had not even been invented; now it seems hard to think of calling the coming decade the Teens without anticipating the next 10 years as nothing but a loud music-loving, door-slamming decade, which will insist upon going out without a coat and bring home a string of inappropriate boyfriends. But of course for the next three years we will not even reach the Teens. These will be the Tweens, the pre-adolescent phase that we'll spend wanting to dress like Hannah Montana.

In truth, I'm not sure we actually got around to naming the noughties until the decade was in its autumnal years. And so perhaps the same will happen once we reach 2010: perhaps we are about to enter the nameless years, a fuzzy, ill-defined age while the 2010s works out just what they would like to be called.

前几年, 中文好像也有这个问题, 即 2000~2009 没有什么统一简单的叫法. 2010~2019 却不然. 譬如说, 上世纪的 1910~1929 就经常被统称为 "一、二十年代".

Sadly, Matt's online behavior is far from an anomaly. Anyone who writes or is written about is now a potential target for abuse. Online civility -- it if ever existed -- has withered up and died. And it's only getting worse.

Hmm, perhaps there might be some discrepancies in the correspondent's report. I just looked up the joint statement made by the two sides. And this is what it had to say in this regard.

The United States and China also agreed to take concrete steps to strengthen dialogue and exchanges between their young people, particularly through the 100,000 Strong Initiative. The United States warmly welcomes more Chinese students in American educational institutions, and will continue to facilitate visa issuance for them. The two sides agreed to discuss ways of expanding cultural interaction, including exploring a U.S.-China cultural year event and other activities. The two sides underscored their commitment to further promoting and facilitating increased tourism. The United States and China agreed that all these activities help deepen understanding, trust, and cooperation.
