One of my students told me there was a clear connection between the Chinese characters and God (Christian God). He told me that someone from Singapore did a research on Chinese characters, and found a clear connection between Chinese character and God. Take the Chinese character for boat 船 for example. The research interpreted this character as 8 people were in a boat or building a boat, which correpondes to the story of Noah's Ark. According to him, there are many other characters that reveal this hidden relation. Another example is the character for forbiden, 禁. My student explained to me the bottom part of 禁 is a sign of God, and the two 木 on top again fits another description in the Bible about good and evil (I am not familiar with Bible story, so couldn't provide any details here). He said there were many other characters that are just like these two. And he said it was amazing, and it was another sign that God created the world. I don't know much about the evolution of the Chinese characters and when I told him that the upper right hand part in 船 is not the character for 8. But he told me that that of the old character is the one for 8. To me it all depends on how you interpret the character. Like one Chinese saying: I know we are not suppposed to talk about religion in this forum. It is just as polarising as politics. My question is more on the Chinese character side.

Everything is connected to God. Jan 25, 2007

For me, everything is connected to God for He is everywhere, within and without. Languages and scripts are especially connected to God, for without them we wouldn't be able to recognise God and within them we come closer to God the deeper we dig into languages and scripts.

(Here we are! You see, the character

Believe me, it is the truth: God is connected to each sign, each symbol and each character we write or type and He is connected to each word we jot, speak or even think. No sh..., no kidding.

I checked the link provided by Pei Ling. It is a very subjective explanation. For someone who has strong belief in any religion, he could use his religion to explain anything. As I said, I am more interested in the evolution of the Chinese character. The explanation in the link is very opinionated, and certainly not an academic one.

As for God, I don't want to be absolute. I believe there is an higher being. But what that higher being is, may it be he, she or it is not important. Try to connect God to everything is superficial. If what is described in the link were the truth, I am wondering why for centuries, one didn't hear any talk about Christianity in China and the Chinese just had a rather peaceful life (relatively speaking if you consider the religious bloodshed in the west). Probably that (simple peaceful life) should be the way how things should be, what God want people to have their life. Could that be that human being has completely missed the true meaning of religion and create all kinds of artificial difference between religions?

very interesting, however very subjective. I am sure different scholars specilized in Chinese character studies will have different interpretations of what those characters mean. The site didn't sell the idea to me. But I guess if I grew up in a Christian environment, it would be another story.

This subject is on the borderline in this forum. Jan 25, 2007

Hi, Everyone

This subject is on the borderline in this forum. Please be very careful with it. If the components in Chinese characters associate with anything or anybody, they are open for interpretations and the Chinese people have already done a good job in explaining them. I think it is appropriate to learn about other people’s new interpretations, but let’s not escalate it too much about it.

Thank you!

Kevin

Kevin,

I won't cross the line here, or at least I will try my best not to. As what I made it quite clear at least I think I did in my original posting that I would like to focus on the evolution of the Chinese character rather than the religious side. But I understand this can become a very sensitive topic if not handled properly. Maybe we can avoid this by doing some 汉字解说实例. While writing this, one example came into my mind.

Let's designate this thread to 说文解字. Jan 26, 2007

Thanks, Tingting, for your understanding. Let's designate this thread to 说文解字. We do not have such a thread yet. It will be an interesting discussion. Most Chinese people might know, or they might not know everything. I am sure the Chinese learners can benifit from this discussion the most.
