http://www.proz.com/siterules/kudoz_asking/2.6#2.6

Dear Colleagues,

Our efforts in the past two weeks didn't fail us in getting rid of the "FIY" and "TRY" problems from the English to Chinese KudoZ sub-community, which is developing healthily. This is something all of us witness. However, are you aware of another problem in KudoZ? Some colleagues, after asking a question, didn't close it in due time, which is another violation of KudoZ rule. Let's look at the following rule:

http://www.proz.com/siterules/kudoz_asking/2.6#2.6

2.6 Askers must close questions. Close questions by selecting the answer deemed most helpful (and awarding it points, unless the question was posed as "not-for-points"). Askers who do not close their questions within an appropriate period of time are not permitted to ask further questions. (Note that when no answer is deemed helpful, it is possible to close a question without selecting a most helpful answer.)

Please note that the wording of this rule is "Askers must close questions."

After a reasonable period of time, the asker has no reason NOT to close the question(s). I found some of the colleagues have OPEN question(s) several months old (including question(s) in any language pair).

Please close these questions at the appropriately time. By doing so, you show respect not only to KudoZ rules, but also to peers who kindly offered help.

I'm pretty sure that all colleagues are intrinsically rule-abiding. So let's stop this bad habit now through joint efforts!

Enjoy working!

FYI and ... Jul 11, 2007

=========
Dear Colleagues,

Recently, "FYI" and "..." were frequently seen in the "Explanation (required)" field. Please note that this field is for providing further explanations. Putting "FYI" or "..." etc. into this field is obviously inappropriate.

The KudoZ-rule-related posts have been around for some time. However, I will still send out explanatory emails to each colleague concerned and, at the same time, hide their corresponding answers so as to stop this habit from promulgating.

I also hope these colleagues could give their answer again in accordance with KudoZ rules.

Thanks for your understanding and support!

English Version:

Why should I enter an explanation for a proposed answer?

A member wrote to me in an email asking why there should be an explanation for a proposed answer. He thinks that sometimes the answer is as easy as 1+2=3, which doesn't need any explanation at all. I replied to him in my email already. But I think it's advisable to write again under this dedicated thread so that all members may get a better idea of this function.

If you are a frequent answerer of KudoZ, you may realize "Explanation" box is a *required* field, meaning if you want to provide an answer, you have to enter a reason for it. But why? What if the question is as easy as 1+2=3?

The obvious reasons are:

1. An explanation can help the asker better understand the term proprosed. The explanation could be where you got the term - from a dictionary? A textbook? A technical paper? Or is it just something of your own invention? The more detailed the explanation is, the better the asker is able to get it. Simply put, you use "explanations" to support your term and distinguish yourself from among other answers.

2. A question as simple as 1+2=3 for the answerer is not always so for the asker. That's why the asker is asking the question. Let's assume all askers are professional translators and they ask questions when all other resources were exhausted. Under this premise, even if the question is really simple to us, it might be really difficult for the asker. Simple things are sometimes more difficult to explain. Still remember when you were a pre-school kid and how you learned 1+2=3? How did your teacher explain it to you? Try to do the same to your colleague in need and he/she will be grateful!

Currently, there are few instances of entering inappropriate content into the "Explanation" box, such as repeating the term itself or "...". I am trying to send individual emails to all these colleagues again. And will hide these answers when spotted. I hope we can get rid of this habit within this month to build an even better KudoZ community.

Thank you again for your support and understanding.
Enjoy KudoZ!

1.3. Text boxes may be used only for their intended purposes. For example:

* The "Ask the Asker" box makes it possible to ask for additional information concerning a question or its context.
* The answerer's explanation box is intended for providing justification of a suggested translation.
* Reference boxes provide a place for links to online resources that the asker and others may consult for confirmation.

Use of the above form fields for purposes other than those described is prohibited. For example, comments such as 'Studied medicine for 3 years' should be entered in the explanation box, not in the reference boxes.

Aug 8, 2007

Enrique 针对

http://www.proz.com/siterules/kudoz_general/1.1#1.1

59. What constitutes "term help" as defined in rule

http://www.proz.com/siterules/kudoz_general/1.1#1.1 ?

KudoZ questions can be used to ask for help on terms or idiomatic expressions.

A group of words (up to approximately 10) should be posted in a single question only when they constitute an unbreakable unit, such as an idiomatic expression (e.g. 'a jack of all trades and master of none') that may be several words long and where omitting any part would not formulate the question correctly.

Askers can also post sentences to ask for help in understanding a meaning, word order or a grammatical issue, but this should be done in the corresponding monolingual language pair. Monolingual KudoZ questions can be asked by selecting the same language for both source and target languages.
