clearwater,

Here are some links of recommendations on how to clean a TFT screen.

http://www.bris.ac.uk/is/computing/advice/hardware/screens/

Cleaning TFT (LCD) screens
Viglen Product Marketing give the following advice:

"For cleaning TFT screens, it is important to keep moistness off the unit because surplus liquid or foam can be easily "sucked" into the screen through capillary action. Once the moisture gets in there, it isn't coming out.

A standard yellow duster is normally suitable. Really stubborn fingerprints and biro marks should be treated with care since pressure on the screen could damage the liquid crystal cell behind. If it's all getting too much, you can try spraying some screen cleaning fluid onto the cleaning cloth (avoiding having free liquid slopping about) and gently buff the screen."

Please note: it appears that almost every manufacturer of TFT screens has their own - different - recommended method of cleaning! All agree that care must be taken not to put pressure on the screen, that use of abrasives (for example, paper towels) should be avoided and that liquids should not be applied directly to the screen. Virtually all recommend against the use of ammonia-based cleaners and solvents such as acetone. Some suggest using a soft, lint-free cloth slightly moistened with just water, or dilute vinegar - but do check beforehand for cleaning instructions in the manual or on the manufacturer's web site.

LCD cleaning

Why? Dirt, dust, and finger prints can cause the computer screen to be difficult to read.

Procedure: Unlike a computer monitor, the LCD / flat-panel display is not made of glass, therefore requires special cleaning procedures.

When cleaning the LCD screen it is important to remember to not spray any liquids onto the LCD directly; do not use a paper towel as it may cause the LCD to become scratched.

To clean the LCD screen we recommend that you use a soft cotton cloth; if a dry cloth does not completely clean the screen, you can apply rubbing alcohol to the cloth and wipe the screen with the damp cloth. Rubbing alcohol is actually used to clean the LCD before it leaves the factory.

LCD care and cleaning instructions - ThinkPad

Solution

Wipe such a stain gently with a dry, lint-free, soft cloth. If the stain remains, moisten the cloth with LCD cleaner (see Additional information) and wipe the stain again. Be sure to dry the LCD before closing it.

Additional information

The TFT LCD screen is a delicate device that requires careful handling. To keep the LCD from being damaged keep these precautions in mind:
Do not place anything heavy on your Notebook system.
Do not scratch, twist or hit the surface of the LCD screen.
To clean, gently wipe the LCD with a dry, lint-free soft cloth.
Note: Antistatic LCD cleaning cloths and Kim Wipes are also acceptable alternatives.

If a stain remains on the LCD, moisten the dry, lint-free, soft cloth with water or a 50-50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water that does not contain impurities.

Attention:
Never spray or pour any liquid directly on the keyboard or LCD panel!

Wring out as much of the liquid as you can.
Wipe the display again; do not let any liquid drip into the computer.
Let the LCD dry before closing the lid.

Attention:
Isopropyl Alcohol is a flammable liquid. Do not use this cleaner near an exposed flame or when the system is on.

Here are a couple of TFT screen cleaning fluids sold in the U.K. You might want to visit the local computer stores and see if they carry something similar. Anyway, a 50-50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water is just 酒精 加 水 But also notice the first link says their product doesn't contain any alcohol. You could consider sending for it through mail, but keep in mind it could be just another sales gimmick.

clearwater & Zhoudan,

That's probably the "raging debate" that first U.K. link was referring to.

Just to make sure, I went to IBM's intranet and did a search. Here are 2 links I found on the subject - both are in the public domain or else I wouldn't post them here - the first of which is identical to that of Lenovo's recommendations that I posted yesterday. My guess is Lenovo inherited the exact same instructions from IBM...

In another research article there was indeed mention of TFT panels having to go through a post-manufacturing cleaning process, just like one of the other links I posted yesterday indicated. So I wouldn't worry too much about using rubbing alcohol in small amounts as long as "big brother" says so.

Anyway, if plain water worked for you that's even better.

Shaunna,

For you it's relatively easy. If you're concerned enough, try this product. BTW, I'm not advertising for anyone. I'm merely providing a lead ...

http://meridrew.com/index.html

The HP customer rep might have a reason for giving clearwater the response he/she did. According to this link about caring for HP plasma or LCD TVs, cleaning agents that contain alcohol should be avoided because they could damage the anti-glare coating. So it makes sense that the same applies to a laptop. If the laptop screen has an anti-glare coating, don't use alcohol.

I'm thinking IBM ThinkPad screens must not be large enough to require the anti-glare coating feature.

Cleaning the LCD TV screen

Use the following steps to clean the LCD TV screen surface:

CAUTION: A special antiglare coating is applied to the screen of your TV. Using solvents such as alcohol or abrasive material such as a paper towel, may affect the screen coating or bezel paint. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Do not expose the TV to volatile gas or fluid such as pesticide. Do not put the TV in contact with vinyl or rubber products for a long period of time. Extended contact may result in the removal of the coating or degradation of the surface. Dropping the TV or forceful impact on the screen surface may cause the TV screen to break.

1. Unplug the power cord from the wall (AC outlet) or surge protector before cleaning the TV.

2. Use a damp cloth to clean the TV screen. Gently wipe the screen and avoid pressing on the screen.

Aug 31, 2007

clearwater,

http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem00/chem00102.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isopropyl_alcohol

It is also a very good cleaning agent and often used for cleaning electronic devices such as contact pins (like those on ROM cartridges), magnetic tape deck and floppy disk drive heads, the lenses of lasers in optical disc drives (e.g. CD, DVD) and removing thermal paste from CPUs. It is also used to clean LCD and glass computer monitor screens (at some risk to the anti-reflection coating of the screen), and used by many music shops to give second-hand or worn records newer looking sheens. It cleans white boards very well and other unwanted ink related marks. Isopropyl alcohol also works well at removing smudges, dirt, and fingerprints from cell phones and PDAs.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/When_do_you_use_rubbing_alcohol

To clean the TFT LCD screens of notebook computers: removes the oily buildup from fingers and cigarette smoke and restores and tones the special coating on the screen (Dilute the rubbing alcohol 2:1 with distilled water then add 2,5ml apple cider vinegar per 100ml - completely restores and cleans).
