Dear All,

This is entirely off-topic.

I have been sent a message which I *think* is written in Chinese. The sender is challenging my linguistic ability and so it is a matter of pride that I manage to identify the language and translate it!

Research so far indicates that it is simplfied chinese.

The URL is:
http://www.kalinkatranslation.com/english/pictograms0001.pdf

(Apologies, I had to hand copy this from another image, and so it may not be 100% accurate).

Can anyone please confirm
1. Whether this is indeed Simplfied Chinese?
2. If not, what language it might be?
3. If yes, suggest any translation?

Many many thanks, for saving my pride!

Wendy

what a bad writing! Nov 27, 2007

Hi Wendy,

It's chinese, I can't tell you if it's traditional or simplified chinese because these two ideograms are the same in traditional chinese and simplified chinese.
Well, it's very bad written, I am not sure that it's a child's writing beacause a chinese child wouldn't write like that.
For the meaning, the first ideogram "wei" means : power, prestige. The second one "yuan" means : institute, court.
Without the context, it's quite hard to say if there is a meaning or not, maybe it's a name, but (for me at least) it doesn't sound like that.
I hope this may help you saving your pride !
Good luck.

bad writing Nov 27, 2007

I know, sorry about that.

I received the message in a picture to my mobile phone, and so the only way to copy it was for me to copy it by hand.

As you can see, it is a question. There is a possibility it is as simple as "how are you" "do you want to go for a drink next week" etc, as this is the sort of message this person has sent me in the past.

Does that help provide any meaning?

I will try to copy the message better.

theater Nov 27, 2007

Wendy,

These 2 characters are written in traditional Chinese.

戲 院 ?

All by itself, the term means "theater", where you go see a show, a musical, or a movie.

The person might just be asking you if you're interested in going to the movies together

It was for the theater, but nowadays it means simply kino - Is it an English word?

Thanks, PK. That's it, the cinema. Kino is a German word. I mix up languages often.
