Size limitations in DejaVu X2 Workgroup?

Dear All

I was just wondering if anyone knows about database size limitations in DejaVu X2 Workgroup.

We are working in a team and have different databases for different languages.
The one we mainly work with has become pretty huge over time: 501.988 KB

As a consequence, it seems to become pretty slow and we have the impression that sometimes matches are not displayed although we are pretty sure they exist.
We do carry out regular maintenance, i.e. compacting, removing duplicates, deleting entries with empty targets,... but fact is that with 7 full-time translators working in the same database the database is getting bigger and bigger.

Has anyone heard of size limitations. I couldn't find anything on Atril's website.

Thank you.

Nat

The "Big Mama" concept Aug 6, 2013

The single, cumulative database, dubbed "Big Mama," has been a mainstay of DV users. However, various folks have noticed over the years that their Big Mama had become downright obese. I assume that's why DVX (and DVX2) added the possibility of linking a project to two databases, rather than just the one, as in the earlier DV versions. You might explore using an assortment of second databases in more restricted ways.

I'm sure other folks will have much more specific recommendations, but this should give you a head start.

Thank you for your answer.
Although this is not the answer I had hoped for

I work for a big company, and someone programmed an interface for us to create DejaVu projects straight from the mail-in database. The databases which are used in a project are defined for each language pair in this interface. So if we change the way we work (more databases) we will need to re-program everything.

Does anyone else have any experience with such huge databases?

Wasn't there a 2 GB limit? Aug 7, 2013

As far as I know, the database engine still limits the database size to 2 GB, but correct me if I am wrong. Mine is now 1,90 GB and still going strong, since 14 years. By the way, the number of databases to be linked to a project is unlimited in the Workgroup edition.

So maybe it's not so much a problem of the database size but maybe rather a server problem or something like that.
Good to hear that others are using bigger memories.
Maybe our IT has to dig a bitter deeper to speed things up.

Thank you!

Wolfgang, is it "just" the dvmdb file that has a size of 1.91 GB or the entire set of files, including the dvmdi files?

I Wonder if this is the reason why DVX2 Workgroup has become slow by me too lately. Also Lookup in Google Translate has become impossible. By comparison Trados 2011 works like a greased lightning.

size limit Aug 7, 2013

Hi Nat,

Not DVX2 but MS Access Jet engine has 2GB size limit. A new version of DVX (3?) may come with SQL database support.

AFAIK not the entire set of files but any one of them.
