Hi everyone!

My client sends a PDF locked with a Password they won't give out. The PDF shows a Power Point Presentation and the end client needs the translation in the Power Point Format. The presentation has many photos and tables.

What can I do to deliver the PPT?

Thank you

Ask the PPT May 9, 2012

The PDF is an end format, one cannot "go back" from the PDF to PPT. In the same way as for food: it is impossible to go back from the prepared meal to the original ingredients. Either you work on the PDF (with Infix, WF Pro, or other), either you type in Word, either you ask for the PPT and translate that.

Charge for PPT May 9, 2012

Then, you need to create the PPT file from scratch. You can either do that for free, or charge the customer.

What does the password block, exactly?
The photos you might be able to copy (but the PDF protection may disallow copying of text and images) or even do a screen shot, likewise with the tables.
Either way, make it crystal clear to the client they will get a visually shoddy product if they don't deliver the original PPT file.

Clarification May 10, 2012

Basically if the customer does not give you the PPT file you cannot return a PPT file that looks exactly the same, unless you really master the tool. Even then, creating the PPT file will take a long time.

When you print a PPT to PDF format, the PPT file is NOT contained in the PDF file. You have to make one again.

OR you can translate the PDF file with the help of some tools (a tool that lets you edit the PDF file). If the PDF file is big, you definitely want to use some professional-level editor that will let you adjust the text after translation.

All in all it is not that easy and you will need tools, some of which are not freeware. It is best that you ask the customer for a PPT file.

Use a pdf password remover and that is that. I do not get clients who need exact format but the file is locked or will not give the editable source.

Exactly the same May 10, 2012

I don't agree, because images lifted from a PDF will never be the same quality as in the original PPT file - mastery or not.

I tried using (actually the IT guys at work) PDF password remover twice in my career and it failed each time. We never managed to get the file to open correctly.

Besides - what is this? It's as if I handed you a little safe and told you the translation is inside and please do it by Monday start of business.
Insist on the original file!

Thanks May 10, 2012

Thank you all so much. I have received a lot of help from you and other translators who wrote to my e-mail. It feels great to know I am not alone.

The client finally agreed to have it done on word.

Best wishes to you all!

It will certainly save yo some work but nevertheless the original request was unrealistic. To speed up work you could now print the pdf and than scan it worth OCR - it may be worth your time if there is plenty of text with many repetitions.
