"Rare" lanaguages mean less competition Dec 12, 2005

I work three languages into English: French, Russian, and Hebrew. To my great initial surprise, 80% of my work is Hebrew, which has the fewest translators, 20% is Russian, and almost 0% is French, whose compeitition seems vicious.

So, less common languages are better market openers, in my opinion.

rare language as lead ins Dec 13, 2005

A rarer language combination has a better chance of getting a first job at an agency. If you do good work, and they need another translator in your "common" language pair, then they turn to you. Your chances of being offered that job independently in a flooded market were nill. However, because you are already known as being reliable, they trust you instead of hitting the market.
