This thread is part of the Translator playground: a place for translators to have fun, to network, to learn, and to hone their translation or linguistic skills. See the announcement here.

Here are a couple of word puzzles for this week. Let's see who posts the right answer (no browsing on the Internet!)

1- Which five letter word becomes shorter when you add two letters to it?

2- Which two words have the most letters in it?

3- What word begins with 'h', ends with 'n', contains six letters, and contains eight words besides itself without transposing a single letter?
Please explain how.

This one is easy: the answer is “short”. Adding -er makes it “shorter” ^_^

More fun with word games & language questions Feb 7, 2012

The word puzzles were fun, thanks!

For more fun with English, I'd like to suggest some free sites for those
who are fond of word games and mini language tests.

A version of scrabble is available here, among other games.

This site offers a wide variety of "mind exercise" games . Of the word games, I prefer Wording, but there are plenty of others.

This Test your English section, based on items published in the paper, is just a small part of the NY Times Learning Center.

If you explore it, you may find it a rich educational resource in other ways, for teaching, for students in your life at home or school, or if you feel like seeing how much you remember of high school math etc.:-)

Have fun.
Best regards to all,
Diantha
