This thread is part of the Translator playground: a place for translators to have fun, to network, to learn, and to hone their translation or linguistic skills. See the announcement here.

Need a quick break from work? In this forum translators and language professionals can share quotes about translation, tongue twisters and word plays, translation challenges, etc.

All are welcome to participate and to add new items to this and the other areas of the Translator playground; have fun with it! If you need help or would like to propose an addition to the Translator playground, contact site staff through the online support system.

Here you can test how fast you are. Just type in the words. Are you faster than all the others? A nice side effect: these are the most used english words. Every time you try to beat the score, you improve your typing speed

Try your typing speed here.
You can post your score below.

Thanks to staff member Matt for this discovery.

Fun! Oct 5, 2011

Dutch (native language): 469 characters, 72 words, 5 mistakes
English (working language): 393 characters, 65 words, 6 mistakes
German (working language): 411 characters, 71 words, 3 mistakes
Indonesian (completely unknown language): 326 characters, 42 words, 6 mistakes

While I was busy, I didn't feel like there was any speed difference at all, but the results show that the better I know a language, the faster I type it.

Interesting.

Interesting! Oct 5, 2011

Spanish (native): 429 characters, 50 correct words, 4 mistakes
English (first working language): 391 characters, 54 correct words, 5 mistakes
German (second working language): 388 characters, 57 correct words, 3 mistakes
Norwegian (completely unknown): 402 characters, 74 correct words, 15 mistakes (no Norwegian characters in my keyboard, which added to my mistakes)

I must say that the Germanic words chosen are much shorter than the Roman ones! Not fair!!!

You reached 391 points, so you achieved position 964 of 57128 on the ranking list

You type 510 characters per minute
You have 97 correct words and
you have 1 wrong words

---

I spend a lot of time typing. However, to be fair, most of the stuff I type looks like:

Code:
    $this->_graph = new Graph();
if (!empty($exclude_edge_coordinates)) {
foreach ($this->_board->toEdges() as $edge) {
if (!in_array($edge[0], $exclude_edge_coordinates) && !in_array($edge[1], $exclude_edge_coordinates)) {
$this->_graph->addedge($edge[0], $edge[1], 1);
}
}
} else {
foreach ($this->_board->toEdges() as $edge) {
$this->_graph->addedge($edge[0], $edge[1], 1);
}
}

Best regards,
Jon Peck

A nice challenge Oct 5, 2011

Everything on the first try:

English (native language): 69 words (365 chrs) per minute, no mistakes
Spanish (second language): 32 words (276 chrs) per minute, no mistakes
Indonesian (unknown language): 38 words (269 chrs) per minute, 2 mistakes

Some comments:
- Spanish has longer words and accent marks.
- "Random" words out of context slows you down.

I imagine I would go faster the second time around. I did learn that I am much more used to typing fast in English, which is what my job is.

Sorry, that would be letting the cat out of the bag...

Go on then (English):
You type 474 characters per minute
You have 86 correct words and
you have 3 wrong words

I imagine the fact these are random words rather than a sentence makes a difference, as we can anticipate words in a meaningful sentence.

Wonder how the cat would do by himself?

Never give a cat a chance to humiliate you! Hide the typing website immediately!
