Intercourse in Matlock Mar 16, 2012

Brilliant, Nicole!

There's also an Intercourse, Alabama - which has a nice ring to it.

The Wikipedia article on the said township contains the classic line "Over the years, the community has identified itself by other names" - I bet they have!

Of course, as linguists, we should probably bemoan the fact that "intercourse" has now come solely to mean "sexual intercourse", thus resulting in the loss of a very useful word. Many a time I've been tempted to translate "Umgang" as "intercourse", but thought better of it...

(Old joke:
"Do you know the difference between sexual intercourse and social intercourse?"
"No"
"Then would you like to come up to my room and have a chat?")

On the other hand, I see nothing odd about Matlock, Washington. I do, however, find it amusing that an American TV series should be named after a small town in Derbyshire

Neil

Nicole, these are hilarious.

I often marvel at street names around here as well and wonder who comes up with these gems. But some of the town names on this list definitely take the cake!

It made me laugh, thanks!

I'm ripe for Looneyville... Mar 18, 2012

... After a long hard week when all my backups threw the same error:

"This file was created with an unknown definition" or something like that... Just like the SDL hotline's effort at restoring it. They've never let me down before...

Mercifully about 66% of the file was in the TM, and I had written some of the terminology down with the primitive but fail-safe pencil and paper!!!

I'd rather dip a biscuit in the Chocolate Bayou, and I feel I deserve a Tightwad of any currency that's going...

Thanks for the laugh, Nicole, it saved my weekend!
