On the other side of the Manche... May 7, 2012

...one political commentator last night (on either Canal+ or France 2) made reference to a certain Mr Braun.

I had to assume from the context that he was talking about a former UK prime minister, and not a well-known grooming products manufacturer...

Another cool thing May 7, 2012

I myself have a rare name in Russian (thanks to my eccentric parents, circus artists in fact), which is Radian. In fact, there is nobody else in Russia bearing such a name. I am a bit hard of hearing but I have always been amused by the way people (with normal hearing) perceive my name -- despite of my clear articulation when I meet someone and who would like to know it they repeat either Radion or Rodion (the latter actually being the only "normal" name) but never precisely as I say. Uh-oh May 7, 2012

I've just heard a Sky News reporter, speaking from Paris, refer *twice* to "François Rollande".

It takes a little time May 7, 2012

Less and less these days. For YEARS Gorbachov was Gorbachev, half way through his presidency Sarkohzee ceased to be. I'm sure Françoise will have had a sex-change by Christmas, or maybe not, Gorbachov never made it to Garbachov.

Channel 4 May 7, 2012

I've just heard a Channel 4 News reporter, Matthew Rugmann, speaking from Paris and even interviewing French people, insisting on saying "François Rollande" again and again !!

As pointed out above May 7, 2012

The French fare no better. David Cameron is Davide on the other side of the channel.

My favourite is Rheims May 8, 2012

Amazing how many English people get here by passing through 'Reams' Mind you, being called Rowena in France can result in some hilarious renditions, after 22 years I reply to just about anything.

Still in Russia... May 8, 2012

Hitler becomes Gitler.

Back to François though: you can try as hard as you like and you still won't cut it. A French friend whose husband's name is 'François' says she falls about laughing every time she hears an English person say his name, and we're talking about much better pronunciations than I've ever heard from any English-speaking BBC correspondent. Sometimes you just can't win.

I know. They talk about "Europe" as though Britain were not part of it.
