Try this... Jan 29, 2004

(sorry, I have the French version, so the names may differ)

In Windows Explorer :
Tools / Folder options / Files types
Select DOC and click "Modify". Then select Open with Microsoft Word.

I had the same problem with Excel, but unfortunately this method did not work.

The method I used after that is not applicable to Word, but it can be of interest for Excel :
In the Excel menu :
Tools/Options/General, uncheck "Ignore other applications".

HTH,
Sylvain

Maybe you should reinstal MS Office altogether Jan 29, 2004

I order to avoid future problems if this happening to all your Word files. If it's just the one, maybe that file is corrupt.

reboot your computer Jan 29, 2004

When this happens in Word, if you reboot your computer, the text icon will return and the text will open. I do not know why this happens sometimes.

normal.dot? Jan 30, 2004

Usually when you have problems with starting up word, you can try to delete normal.dot This is the template of Word that often causes problems. (go to find: files or folders: normal.dot Rightclick and choose delete. (you can save it first under another name if you think you might need it again)

If that doesn't work: Can you open the file with notepad? It might be that the file has become corrupt in some way. You can try to open it in notepad (which will strip it of all the layout) and then copy paste it back to word. And then do the lay out again.

Memory Jan 30, 2004

Hi ya all!

Were you running a lot of other software/applications before this happened? If so it can simply be that XP ran out of designated memory for Office. Strange but sometimes it doesn't help just ending a program, it keeps a "thread" in the background and it almost freezes. There for it does work like explained above. Reboot or end the processes in the background. Hope in makes more sence!

DDE settings? Jan 30, 2004

Maybe you should check the DDE Settings in Windows Explorer: Tools - Folder Options - File Types - DOC - Advanced - Action: Open - Edit.

These are my settings (in Windows XP, Office 2000):

Application used to perform action:
"E:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office\\WINWORD.EXE" /n

DDE Message:
[REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]

You could also check your computer for viruses.

Can you open files from Word using File - Open?
