A search for a term on Google ("core crack") yields 4180 hits. Limiting the search to hits from German language sites returns 21.800 hits. Does this make any sense at all?

have you checked the settings for:
Suche: X Das Web
In "settings" (Einstellungen) you may have limited the search to a strange country. I do get 790.000 google hits for "core crack" when searching the web.

If you had 780.000 hits, you didn't search for the exact term. The quotation marks have to be entered as well in order to produce the effect...

Hi Klaus,
I get the exact same results (and 13800 hits for sites from Germany, i.e. not necessarily in German) - that is weird! I checked all of my settings and use them actively; everything is set the way it is supposed to be (as far as I can tell). There is nothing about it in the FAQ, though it may have something to do with their rating system (PageRank)... Something strange is going on.

It is really strange. I got only 4,790 hits when quoted. My preferences are set to "any language, anywhere, anytime," etc.
As a confirmation, when the language is set to German, hits rise to 21,700
And still strange, when the language is set to English,
I get 36,200
When combined (English & Genman), the result is 4,630

English + Turkish = 38,700

When limiting to Italian, however, I get only 11 hits... this is really funny!

Maybe if you go to the last search pages in German, you would get the message "The other hits are very similar to the allready shown and are not shown..."
I do not know the Google algorithmus for searching, but I often got hits on same web pages, shown by Google at different pages with search results. This means, that when I searched for the term, the same page was refered more than once, but not on the same search page, showing 10 results, but on ano... See more and not the exact number.
Maybe if you go to the last search pages in German, you would get the message "The other hits are very similar to the allready shown and are not shown..."

However this does not explain why a search with no language specifier gives about 5,000 results & a search with Ger or Eng specifiers gives 38,000 results. (BTW Italian results are only 11)

Some years ago I had a similar question and asked Google about it. As an answer they sent me the link to their help page..

- but, as Jerzy hinted, the number of total results given has little value: if you view one result page after the other, it stops long before you reach that number, even if it is below 1000, with the message Jerzy mentioned: "The other hits are very similar..."
