Can TIF files be edited? If so, how? This document is mostly text but has a few graphs with text to be translated vertically (on the y-axis). I can look at this file and you can select bits but I really need to just overwrite the text.

Also, how can you get a word count in a TIF document?

method 1:

if the TIF is pasted into a Word document, you can try to put text boxes over the words in the original picture, making sure that the background of the text box is opaque (so that the original word does not show from underneath).

method 2:

open the TIF using bitmap editing software (PhotoPaint, Photoshop, PaintShop Pro) and work on the words by using the eraser tool to erase the original word and then the text tool to write the translated word.

Either way it\'s a pain.

word count - I don\'t know of any way to do this.

If it\'s a page, you\'d better retype it. If it\'s a substantial amount, you might consider recognizing with an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software.

Much depends on the quality of the original, and the quality of the OCR, but in any case, it might requre substantial follow-up from you.

So you have to be very cautios with it!

You could try saving it in BMP format Feb 7, 2003

Dear Heart

You could open the file up and save it in BMP format. The text can then be deleted in Microsoft paint or any other BMP editable application and a new text box added. It must be said, a complicated approach taking up a lot of time. Don\'t charge by the word!!!

Hope it helps

Sorry Feb 8, 2003

There is no simple way to edit a TIF file in a time efficent manner. A TIF file is nothing more than a picture. The file format just specifies which colors go at what locations on the screen. Because of this OCR is the only way to extract the text. As far as editing the text there is no way to do it beyond software for editing pictures. And with respect to being able to get a word count there is no way with OCR software since the file format knows nothing about letters and word boundries.
