When renderning a patent from German to English, when does one use \"said\" instead of \"the\"? Is it every time after the first time a certain item is mentioned, i.e.

\"The invention concerns two widgets. Said widgets...\"?

I ask because (based solely on my potentially faulty experience) it seems that there is no German construction similar to the \"said\" in English, and the sentence quoted above would read

\"Die Erfinding betrifft zwei Geraete. Die Geraete...\"

Thanks in advance for any help.

I think the English patent \"dialect\" is as impossible as the German one icon_wink.gif

Hi Kevin,

Your guess is right, there is indeed no equivalent term in German patentese for \"said\" and most of my patent customers wouldn\'t accept \"besagte/s/r\".

However, when translating from German into English it should be used in the claims of a patent after the first appearance of a term.

If Patentese is to be considered English (or German) at all is a different question icon_wink.gif...

Hope that\'ll help.

Stephan
