Please help.
I am a freelance translator and would like to make it my full time occupation. Therefore, I would like to have the proper software for this purpose. Can you please advise me which is better: SDLX or Trados???
Appreciate your help a lot.

Hi Maryse,
I\'ve never used TRADOS, but many fellow translators have told me it\'s just a pain in the neck, and of course, very expensive. I have used and bought SDLX and find it extremely good: it\'s fast, easy to learn, has efficient technical support, and can export files in TRADOS format if your client asks for a TRADOS translation. Honestly, it\'s really good. I\'ve worked with various software tools before, mainly TRANSIT, and I can safely say that SDLX is really very ... See more Hi Maryse,

If you want to see a previous discussion about this (I asked almost the same question as you some time ago) go to Forums->CAT Tools-> Comparison Shopping.

You could try WordFast. It is free and supposedly compatible with Trados, Transit, DejaVu and Cypresoft. I downloaded it a week ago from http://www.champollion.net. I\'m still trying it out, but it seems pretty good so far (at least compared to my limited experience with Trados). There is also an active discussion list on Yahoo Groups for WordFast users. I have TRADOS 5 (freelance) and love it to bits. I\'ve been working with it for 3 months and it has already more than saved me the initial investment. Saying that, I have never really used any other system. If you do get Trados, then you should seriously consider going to a seminar to have someone explain the workings of the system to you. For example, using the \"attribute\" fields can save you a whole lot of trouble. | |

I can only comment about Trados, since I have never used anything else but - here are some thoughts (some of which reflect previous comments in these forums):
- Yes, it has some glitches, but I have yet to find a software package that has none. - Yes, it can be expensive (although I find that the Freelance version is not that bad). - Yes, you need training to fully use the functionality - try grouping with others to reduce the cost (or ask Trados about th...
