Hello,

There's a job opening for a copy editor position in my city and I'm pretty interested. Do you think an experience as a copy editor would increase a beginner translator's worth in the eyes of customers? Or do you think my time is better spent on promoting myself and searching for potential clients? Thank you.

If you are a beginner Feb 24, 2012

you should never, ever edit texts. This is a job for seasoned professionals. Only experienced translators and writers know the parameters of editing.

I don't know, but the publishing company doesn't state experience in the requirements.

Can't hurt to apply Feb 24, 2012

Hello,

I agree with Nicole about correcting translations and I'd also say that monolingual copy-editing (if that's what's involved here) is in itself a skilled job, but it can't hurt to apply. Inexperienced freelancers often need practice in applying for jobs, too. However, if it would take up a lot of your time then it might not be a good idea to accept. If you want to be a translator, better to specialise in that at first. Time for copy-editing later.

Sheila

not in the begining Feb 24, 2012

standard and quality translation requires years of experience. one can not claim to have become a editor or proof reader having only a couple of years experience . Clients should also be particular or careful in their judgment on who can be an editor . or who is merely a translator. Thanks
