Hi everyone,

Would you recommend to get the VAT ID at the same time that you register with the Finanzmant or will you wait till you have any possibilities of overcoming the income threshold , which I think is EUR 24,500?

Thanks in advance,

Estefanía

Being registered for VAT saves you money Nov 5, 2004

Being registered for VAT means that you can deduct the VAT you pay on anything you buy for your business (from dictionaries through to a new PC) from your taxes.

In Germany, translation prices are generally quoted (to business customers at least) net of VAT - i.e., you quote your price, do your translation, calculate your net price and then add VAT to it.

So if you do EUR 508 of translation in one month (including VAT) and then go out and buy a new computer for EUR 1016 (including VAT), you get EUR 8 back from the tax office.

Of course it means you have the hassle of doing tax returns every so often

FWIW

I'll have the extra € 62,07 if you don't want the full tax refund.

... that depends how much you earn ... Nov 5, 2004

When you register for VAT they will ask you how much you expect to earn. I can't remember where the thresholds are, but there are annual, quarterly and monthly VAT returns (from earning not very much through to earning a lot). Your local Finanzamt or Steuerberater will be able to tell you more.
