Hi folks.

I'm new here, relatively, and am considering paying the annual subscription of US$120 (BRL250+).

Could you please honestly tell me if it's worth paying the fee?

I know that it IS worth paying the fee, of course it is, but I'd just like some friendly tips and advice and to know your overall opinions.

Thanks a lot everyone.

Richard.

Blue Board etc. Feb 21, 2006

I would pay it just for being able to check on the Blue Board. If it just saves you from not being paid by only one not entirely reliable agency, you've earned your money back. At least you spent it on something useful instead of working for nothing.

Oh well, of course I would not if it was just that! I think there is a lot of useful content to be found on this site, and that's another reason to support it.

Last but not least, I met some of my current customers via ProZ although not necessarily through bidding on jobs.

Anjo

Hi,
I agree, it is worth!
Just to begin, most of the bids today are restricted to paying members and even if you do not win most of them it is always a way to contact new potential clients. In addition you enter in a very large community and, very soon, you will feel as in the main square of a village where everyone meets the others, exchange opinions, help each other, etc.
In a world like the one we are living today isn't that a real nice experience?

The statistics say that you, a professional translator, will find this a worthwhile investment. I have been collecting comments on this topic since last September. See: http://www.proz.com/testimonials

For more information, the ProZ.com team and our mission is described here. Note that by becoming a member, you are not only making ProZ.com possible, you are also hiring us to work for you.

Of course, if you don't find membership valuable, you can always get a prorated refund. Fewer than 1% of those who become members request a refund.

Thanks Henry, and nice to meet you.

I will certainly have a look at those statistics and consider the investment over the next few days or weeks.

And I suppose that by supporting the site financially it keeps the advertising down to sensible and related topics.

And the point about the blueboard is very relevant Anjo.

Any other opinions.
Perhaps any negative. (Sorry Henry!)
?

Richard.

Oh, yes ... Feb 21, 2006

But they're too big to juggle now, or to fit all of us in a bed ... but we've been there and done that!
They complain I'm too busy working and "prozing" to listen to them any more, but they enjoy spending the money I make, often thanks to ProZ.com.
Joking apart, the kind of search engine exposure you get with Platinum membership is well worth it.
Not to mention the jobs through proz networking - major source of my own income.
Term help and other support shouldn't be underestimated either.

That's my experience and I think I'm not alone.

Not to mention... hosting Feb 21, 2006

Because of ProZ I have a web presence. So to me, it is worth it.

And if checking the Blue Board means you know to steer away from a client unlikely to pay... the savings may pay off.

Could be... Feb 21, 2006

Hi Richard,

As you, I would like to know if it’s worth. I bought my membership last December and still had no significant results. I know it’s still soon and that I have my limitations (namely, not being a full-time freelancer). It seems you have to be very specific, both in your translation field and in the software you master. But in your case, it seems it would be a wise choice, I think 

Best,

Cristina

OK, thanks Christina, that's useful, but why do you elicit in 'my' case it would be a wise choice. Why isn't it a wise choice for you?

It's too early for me personally to comment on whether I like ProZ.com that much, but remember that negative comments are useful because they help us build a constructive base on what other people do and don't like, and therefore what to go for, what to avoid. Anyway, we're here, so that IS positive.

Why hasn't it been successful for you?

Anybody else with Neg. or pos. comments?

A couple of suggestions Feb 21, 2006

You might want to get in touch with ProZ participants (both paying members and plain users) who work with your language pairs and/or specialties. This could give you a better idea of how being or not a member has helped them build their business.

Also, you might want to use the features available to everyone (members and users alike) for a few weeks to see if that is enough for your needs, or whether you would prefer to have the added functionality avaliable only to those who pay.

Another point to consider would be whether you are just starting out (active participation in Proz could probably help you in this case), or are already established as a freelance translator.

In my case, there are things that I like about the site, and things that I don't. If the first ones ever offset the second ones, I will gladly pay [again] for membership.

Hi Richard, Feb 21, 2006

Yes, it is definitely worth it. I think first and foremost for the Blue Board and for the jobs. It takes a little while to see results, but not long. If there is slack time right now, update your resume, hone your skills, etc. Before you know it, you will be swamped. You'll see.

Let me also make a small comparision, perhaps that will help guide you:
I am a member of two translation organizations - ProZ and another one. My membership of both is the same level.
I have been with ProZ a year less than the other one. I acquired a good-sized number of (regular) clients through ProZ and only one from the other site.

Hope this helps.

Good luck!
Lucinda

A site like this 100% support any time, it really works. I have seen probably a few thousand Database driven websites, none work so good as this one and yet be transparent. Brandis - pro prozee

A note Feb 21, 2006

Richard, I had a look into your profile and as you seem to be specialised in IT, and an engineer, I think you are the sort of “specialised translator” many clients are looking for. That’s why I said it could be good for you, this if you are interested in enlarging your client base. As for me, remember I said it is still too soon to have a positive opinion. Maybe I just thought jobs would be popping as soon as I bought membership and it was not like that at all.

But of course there are also other benefits, such as the BlueBoard, the ability to ask more questions and… well, the site is more and more targeted to benefit those who pay, isn’t it?

Regards,

Cristina
