I am a japanese translator. I will be buying a laptop in some days and I want to know what is the specification required. Specifications in terms of capacity of harddisk, size of screen, type, brand of laptop, DVD/VCD drives, floppy drives, mouse, processor manufacturer, processor type, processor speed, model, video card and audio cards (what are these?), height, depth, width operating system, internet connection, RAM type, memory card slot (what is this?) etc. Is there internet facility that d... Is there any technology that is new?
I am asking this from a general person's aspect who wants to use it and more importantly as a translator. As a translator, I require to install softwares, etc. Kindly let me know in detail because this is once in a life-time investment and I want to go for the best one.

If you don´t need it right away, wait till end of the year Jul 19, 2006

as breaking changes are announced on the CPU-market. Intel is introducing a new generation of CPUs late summer this year, so the will be then implemented in laptops later.

Brand does not matter so much, but don´t go for no-name products.
If you search this forum for laptop, you will find previous threads on the same topic with a lot of hints from vaious users.

BTW, I´ve moved the topic to hardware forum, where it fits best IMO.

64 bits is very important for the future!!!!!!! Jul 19, 2006

I think the more important thing is in the moment to buy a 64 bits CPU like AMD or Intel. The only thing is, that the Intel 64 bits CPU are more expensive than the AMD.
The other details of the laptop or computer are enough in every offer.

Not so important as long the new Windows and Office versions are not available and wide spreaded Jul 19, 2006

Most of the software we need today is written for 32bit systems, so 64 bit are not a question of life or death. Nevertheless, most CPUs are nowadays 64 bit...

And the price situation is going to be drastically different. The new Intel CPU, named Core Duo is much cheaper as AMD devices and offers more power. That´s why I would suggest to wait half a year before buying - and then buy a new CPU, with two cores, not only one. These are all 64 bit units.

A day's work if one wants to cover it all in detail. What would be the pay? How about enlightening us re. your expectations, for example, is laptop your to-be prime or secondary machine? For travel or not? Which "softwares" possibly - AutoCAD or just Word/PPT? Things like that, just out of respect for the potential answerers.

I'm just recalling all the rage swirling here on these very forums regarding using amateurs instead of professionals and what unfortunate results usually come out of it. Yet some questions in recent posts really knock me down.

What is this - a hunt for free cheese, naivete, or... ?

Sorry...

Don´t be sure, that all new CPU from Intel are 64 bits and are cheaper then Intel.
Please visit the homepage from AMD and make the compare.

There's no need to bite his head off.

Good info about the dual core processors (these are Intel Centrino processors, yes?). I'm in the market for a new laptop - possibly even for use as my main machine, as my desktop is over 4 years old now.

I'm not entirely convinced about the advice to wait until the end of the year, although I fully understand the reasons behind it. It's that there is always some new development just around the corner.

(edited for fat fingered typos!)

But I´m not speaking about development, I´m speaking about changes!
This won´t be the Pentium platform anymore, but a completly (almot, of course) new one.
Given the fact, that AMD processors are now the more powerfull in desktop segments this is gonna change. Until now you always got a better performance for less money with AMD. The next important thing is the energy consumption, which makes it interesting for laptops. The new Core Duo processors are less electrcity cosuming than all current desktop CPUs. So these are reasons enough to wait until Fall this year.

As for Centrino - this is Intel´s technology for energy saving, not a brand for CPUs.

Regarding the 64 bit argument - as long we do not have 64 bit pograms as standard, there is no real need for such processor.
Remember how it was as Windows 95 came. Even Win95 was not fully 32-bit software and it has taken several years until all software was 32-bit.
This shall not mean that we should not buy 64 bit CPU - as most probably everything new what is comming to the market will be 64 bit.

Better go to a specialised dealer Jul 19, 2006

than buing off the shelve from the supermarket. The chepest offers usually have some weaknesses, as the use of desktop processors in laptops, XP Home instead of Pro.
This is all my advice free of charge

It depends what you want it for.

Often buying last year's product gives you an excellent discount and is sufficient onto your needs.

Comming back to new CPU release this year Jul 20, 2006

I did not mean the CPUs you can get now.
The future "Core Duo" series are not delivered yet, so there are no dealer prices for them. Although I have read tests in two different PC magazines and a comparison with AMD.
This does also not mean, that AMD is not comming to bring something new.

So it depends - if you want to buy a notebook to keep it running for more years from now, wait until Fall. If you are OK with having it outdated in one or two years at the latest, than

Just for the record: I have an old Sony Vaio, boought 2002. It features a Pentium Mobile IV with 1,6 GHz, has only 512 MB RAM (after I added 256 MB - and nothing more goes) and a small 20 GB HDD. But it is still OK for working. Nevertheless, it is totally outdated, as it does not feature Centrino technology, it´s HDD is a very slow one and so on. Outdated in terms of computer is a very subjective definition, so everyone has to define this term for himself.

Same chip as in new Macs? Jul 21, 2006

Jerzy, are the Intel Core Duo chips you're referring to the same ones they're putting in the new Macs with Intel chips?

The test I read reffered to Intel Core-2, as can be seen here: http://www.intel.com/products/processor/core2/
This is a new generation, as Intel states.

Mac uses Core Duo (look here: http://www.apple.com/macbook/intelcoreduo.html), but without reffering to an Intel logo, so I cannot be sure.

According to what I read in the test, the new Core 2 processors shall come after July 27th (this is for Germany, maybe US is faster).

For anyone who reads German, the information and test can be found here http://www.techchannel.de/technologie/prozessoren/443388/
A test in English is here http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,126342,pg,2,00.asp

I have three points to make, and please take these kindly as advice, or something to think about.

The first is regarding the laptop. You are saying, it is going to be a lifetime investment. Experience shows, that computer technology is changing so fast, that you may keep this laptop for a number of years, but 'lifetime' is over-optimistic.
So you may not want the most expensive one, full of gadgets, but a good, solid, reliable one, in other word a workhorse, maybe a bit cheaper, in view of the fact that time will come when you will have to change it. If nothing else, internet technology and software requirements will change, and your - by then 'old' - machine won't be able to cope.
By the way, you can ask some of the basic questions you asked here from a computershop assistant, or read about it on the internet, or books, magazines.

The second is, that I had a look at your profile. Are you sure that you got your rates right? I am not going to quote them here, but please check yourself. Apart from anything else, it looks if your hourly output is 20 words.

The third is just a question out of curiosity. I would have thought that - beside English and Japanese - you may have a third language. Why don't you translate to and from that language as well, - say paired with English? Is that field too crowded, not enough translation jobs to go around?

Best regards
Judith
