תקציר ההרצאה הראשונה -"סלים אלדאודי, בן חכם באשי עכו והגליל, כמתרגם ספרות השכלה לערבית במצרים" - הרצאה זו עוקבת אחרי ראשיתה של פעילות התרגום מן הספרות העברית החדשה לשפה הערבית ובו בזמן אחרי תחילתה של הכתיבה הספרותית הערבית בידי משכילים יהודים. לצורך זה מתמקד הדיון בתרגומו של סלים אלדאודי לרומן "אהבת ציון" (1853) מאת אברהם מאפו. רומן זה נחשב לרומן העברי הראשון ולאחת היצירות החשובות בהטפה לחידוש הקשר בין היהודים לבין ארץ ישראל. תרגומו של אלדאודי, שהתפרסם במצרים בשתי מהדורות בשנת 1899 ובשנים 1921-1922, נחשב לתרגום הראשון מן הספרות העברית החדשה לשפה הערבית ולאחת היצירות הראשונות הכתובות בערבית בידי משכילים יהודים.
אלדאודי העניק לתרגומו יומרות לאומיות כשהצהיר שתכליתו של התרגום היא להזכיר לבני עמו שהשפה העברית שפה חיה. ויתכן שזו הסיבה למגמות המעורבות במדיניות התרגום שלו. כי מחד, ישנן נורמות תרגום המעידות על רצון בהתקבלות בתרבות היעד, כמו חוסר שמירה על מלאות התרגום, הגבהת הרמה הלשונית והסגנונית של טקסט התרגום, שמירה על הנורמות האתיות, ואף נטייה לתרגום בפרפראזה. ומאידך, ישנן נורמות תרגום המעידות על התחשבות יתר בלשון ובטקסט המוצא, כגון ריבוי הסטיות מכלליה הלשוניים, התחביריים והדקדוקיים התקניים של הלשון הערבית, שימור היסודות הייחודיים לתרבות היהודית וריבוי ההתערבות הלשונית של לשון המוצא העברית בלשון התרגום הערבית. מגמות מעורבות אלה מעידות, כנראה, על חוסר מיומנותו של המתרגם בכתיבה ספרותית, על הערכתו הרבה ללשון וטקסט המוצא ועל הפניית תרגומו בעיקר לקהל יעד יהודי.

על המרצה: ד"ר מחמוד כיאל, אוניברסיטת תל-אביב, יליד הכפר ג'דיידה שבגליל המערבי. למד באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים, באוניברסיטת חיפה ובאוניברסיטת תל-אביב. את עבודת הדוקטורט כתב בנושא התרגומים מן הספרות העברית החדשה לשפה הערבית. שימש כעורך לשוני וכיועץ לענייני תרגום מעברית לערבית ולהפך. מרצה בחוג ללימודי הערבית והאסלאם באוניברסיטת תל-אביב ובחוג להוראה באוניברסיטת חיפה. כתב מחקרים שונים בענייני המגעים בין-תרבותיים בין יהודים לערבים בעת החדשה.

תקציר ההרצאה השנייה: "המתורגמן בהליך הבדיקה בפוליגרף" - רקע היסטורי והדרכים ההיסטוריות או העממיות לאבחון שקר. נדבר על הבסיס התיאורטי לפוליגרף המודרני ועל היישומים המקובלים באבחון שקר. תאור של הליך הבדיקה. שילוב מתורגמן בהליך הבדיקה – מגבלות והדגשים. שילוב מתורגמן בסיטואציה של קומוניקציה עם נבדק.

על המרצה: מר מרדכי (מורדי) גזית - פסיכולוג בהשכלתו האקדמית, את הכשרתו בפוליגרף רכש במשטרת ישראל בשנת 1974. בעבר שימש כמנהל בפועל של מעבדות הפוליגרף במשטרת ישראל וניהל את בית הספר לפוליגרף של המשטרה. מופיע כעד מומחה בבתי המשפט . חבר באיגוד בודקי הפוליגרף בארה"ב (שהינו הגוף הבינלאומי שמאגד את בודקי הפוליגרף בעולם) ובאירופה. הוא גם יו"ר איגוד בודקי הפוליגרף בישראל – א.פ.י. כיום מנהל מכון פוליגרף פרטי ועוסק גם בהכשרת בודקי פוליגרף בארץ ובמדינות שונות בעולם.

First Lecture Abstract – Salim al-Dawudi, the Son of Hacham Bashi Akko and Galilee, as Translator of Hebrew Enlightenment Literature into Arabic in Egypt". Knowledge of Arabic IS NOT required for this lecture. This paper deals with the beginnings of the translation of Modern Hebrew literature into Arabic, and at the same time with the beginnings of Arabic literary writing by Jewish intellectuals. We will focus on Salim al-Dawudi’s translation of the first Hebrew novel, Avraham Mapu’s Ahavat Zion [The love of Zion] (1853), one of the most important texts to advocate the renewal of ties between Jews and Palestine. Al-Dawudi’s translation was published in Egypt in two unidentical editions in 1899 and 1921-1922, and it is probably the first Arabic translation of Modern Hebrew literature. When he declared that his translation was designed to remind his people that Hebrew was a living language, al-Dawudi accorded his translation Jewish national aspirations, which is perhaps the reason for the mixed aims of his translation’s policy. On the one hand, there are phenomena that illustrate his desire to be accepted in the target culture, such as neglect of the integrity of the text, raising its stylistic register, preserving the ethical norms of the source text and even a tendency to paraphrase. On the other hand, there are places that display over-consideration of the source language and text, such as numerous deviations from the standard linguistic, syntactical and grammatical rules of Arabic, preservation of elements unique to Jewish culture and a multitude of Hebrew interferences in the Arabic translation. This unsystematic behavior apparently reflects a lack of literary skills, deep admiration of the source text (and language), and the fact that the translation was addressed mainly to a Jewish audience.
About the Speaker

Dr. Mahmoud Kayyal was born in Judieda village, West Galilee. He has studied in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Haifa University and Tel Aviv University. His doctoral dissertation dealt with translations from Modern Hebrew literature into Arabic. Employed as proofreader and project advisor of Hebrew-Arabic and Arabic-Hebrew translations, senior lecturer in the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies in Tel Aviv University and in the Department of Teaching in Haifa University, Dr Kayyal has written several studies on contemporary intercultural contacts between Jews and Arabs.

Second Lecture Abstract –"Interpreters in a Polygraph Test" - Historical background and historical or popular ways to diagnose a lie. We will discuss the theoretical basis for the modern polygraph & the accepted applications when diagnosing a lie. There will be an outline of the examination procedure. Integration of interpreters in the examination process – limitations and emphases as well as an integration of interpreters into the process of communication with the examinee.


About the Speaker
Mr. Mordechai (Mordi) Gazit – a psychologist in his academic background, who acquired his polygraph training in the Israel Police in 1974. In the past he served as a de facto manager of the Israel Police’s polygraph labs & managed the police’s polygraph academy. He appears as an expert witness in courts. He is a member of the American Polygraph Association (an international body of the world’s polygraph examiners) and in Europe. He also serves as the chairman of The Israel Polygraph Examiners Association – IPEA. At present, he manages a private polygraph center & also trains polygraph examiners in Israel and other countries around the world.
Registration will begin at 17:00 (light refreshments will be served) and the first lecture will start at 18:00 sharp.

As seating is limited – reservations will be made on a first come–first served basis.
