Hi,

How helpful are the MT (Machine Translation) tools for English to Hindi pair?

Does not seem to be practical. Sep 10, 2009

हिन्दी फ़ोरम के हिसाब से मुझे यह जवाब हिन्दी में लिखना चाहिए था। लेकिन क्योंकि शुरुआत अँग्रेज़ी में हुई, जवाब भी अँग्रेज़ी में लिख रहा हूँ :
Hello Binod !
Well, I think machine translation software/utilities rather suite the Western languages, especially Romance languages which have a great similarity of grammar and syntax. Even though machine translation programs use segmentation of larger texts, the appropriate contexts would often be missing in the case of Oriental languages like Hindi, Bengali, Urdu and so on. Besides, Indo-European languages involve a great deal of idiomatic expressions and dialectical varieties that should be difficult to cope with using MT tools. However, such programs developed by natives may some day lead to a ray of hope in this regard.
