I live in the North-Eastern United States. Do any of you know what programs are available in this area for medical interpreter certification?

Only Washington and California offer Certification Aug 24, 2008

Hello Sara,

It's my understanding that Washington state and California are the only states that offer certifications you can take training classes in all other states and receive a certificate of completion at the end of the classes, in Virginia Northern Virginia AHEC, offers a 40 hour training class, it is very complete, although I would have liked that they offered beginners and advancedicon_eek.gif, you can try to search bridging the gap and find a class near where you live, also check these out,
I don't know if it's even near your area but it might give you some help to start.

Good Luck!

California Sep 2, 2009

California used to have a medical interpreting exam, administered by Cooperative Personal Services. However, the exam has not been given for the last two years (approx.) and there are currently no plans to resume it. Those who inquire about it are told to take Court Certification instead.

There are training programs in California (Southern California School of Interpretation is one of them), which issue a certificate upon successful completion of the course, but this is different from a State issued certification.

And National certification now is only in the plans (as you can see from the links given in this thread) - it doesn't actually exist yet.
